BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Georgia dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 10 South Carolina in the semifinals of the SEC Women's Golf Championships on Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Bulldogs bested No. 20 Auburn, 3-2, in the quarterfinals at the Greystone Golf and Country Club.
"It kind of feels like last year when Florida did it to us and played so great and we finished as runner-up," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It's why you coach and compete in the SEC. It's full of great athletes and great programs. We sure as heck didn't lose. They won. Hat's off to them, but I'm very proud of my team. They played great."
South Carolina, the tournament's top seed after leading three rounds of stroke play competition, continued its hot streak on Saturday. Jillian Hollis secured Georgia's point in the match, defeating Ainhoa Olarra, 3-and-2. All of the other completed matches went at least 17 holes. Gabriela Coello dropped a heartbreaker in the first match on the course. Coello shot 1-under from a stroke play perspective and trailed for only two holes of the match, at No. 3 and after Anita Uwadia birdied No. 18.
Hollis, Rinko Mitsunaga and Paula Neira Garcia captured wins over Auburn in the semifinals.
"We played really well this morning, kind of like we did in round two (of stroke play)," Brewer said. "Again, it was everyone throughout the lineup. We beat an Auburn team that played really good. I think that they two or three players under-par and we still beat them. That tells you how well we played."
Hollis' posted a decisive 6-and-5 victory that included seven birdies on her 13 holes. She was 5-under on the day when the match ended five holes short of a complete round.
Mitsunaga won her 14th and 15th holes of the day to move to 3-up with three holes remaining. After Kaleigh Telfer birdied the next hole, Mitsunaga clinched the match by halving the next hole.
Neira Garcia followed suit minutes later. She was 3-up with three to play, lost the next hole but then clinched on the same green as Mitsuanga.
Georgia will now await its NCAA Regional placement next Wednesday. The Bulldogs will be assigned to one of four 54-hole tournaments in Tallahassee, Fla.; Austin, Texas; Madison, Wis.; or Stanford, Calif. Regionals will be played on May 7-9 and will feature 18 teams at each site. The top six teams from each Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 18-23 in Stillwater, Okla.
