#5 Georgia Shuts Out Panthers Wednesday, 7-0

ATHENS, Ga. – The fifth-ranked Georgia softball team (36-5) shut out in-state foe Georgia State (20-19) Wednesday evening at Jack Turner Stadium, 7-0.
The shutout of the Panthers is Georgia's 19th shutout this season.
Mary Wilson Avant (3-1) pitched five shutout innings in her start in the circle, allowing just two hits to the Panthers. She fanned five opposing hitters and walked two. Amanda Ablan completed the shutout, pitching two innings in relief, picking up three strikeouts.
Justice Milz recorded a three-hit, three-RBI evening while Cortni Emanuel and Ciara Bryan each picked up two hits.
Milz used a two-run home run, scoring Emanuel, to straight-away centerfield in the bottom of the first to put Georgia ahead early, 2-0.
Milz reached on a one-out base hit to left then came in to score on a double to the wall in left center off the bat of Alysen Febrey in the bottom of the third, 3-0 Bulldogs.
The final four runs came in to score for Georgia in the fourth. With two on and one out, Jordan Doggett drove in Bryan with a single back up the middle. A fielding error loaded the bases for Milz. A groundout drove in designated player Tyler Armistead. Two more came in on a single to right center off the bat of Alyssa DiCarlo, lengthening the lead to 7-0.
Avant and Ablan combined for three more innings of shutout softball to secure the victory for Georgia.
Up next, Georgia hosts Mercer in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.

On the team's performance...
"I thought it was a good effort by the girls. We had a really good practice day yesterday and came out today with a really good mindset. I thought it was really important Mary got us off to a really good start. We made some good plays on defense, and [Cortni] and [Justice] got us going there and gave us some momentum. From there, we played pretty good softball on the way out."
On Justice Milz's performance at the plate...
"Just a really good mindset. She was hitting situationally in a good portion of her at-bats, if not all of them. They gave her a good pitch to hit, and she let it go and it went into the stands. But I think it was more so her mindset, is what really put her in a position to be successful tonight. And then from there, she just got good pitches to hit."

"I think my success came from staying relaxed and focused on the task at hand."
On how other student-athlete getting hits make her job easier…
"It just makes everything more relaxed. You are able to have more fun [in the circle] and connect with everyone."

"It really helps us play together and to lock in. It also helps us get behind our pitchers and a feel for our different pitchers. We have had a lot going on lately. It lets us play together and see how we can take that to the series this weekend."
