Former Bulldog Uibo Wins Bronze At Worlds

March 04, 2018 | Track & Field

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. --- Former Georgia track and field champion Maicel Uibo scored a personal record to earn a bronze medal in the heptathlon at the IAAF World Indoor Championships over the weekend.

Uibo, a native of Polva, Estonia, scored 6,265, which ranks third on the 2018 world list, to outlast Germany's Kai Kazmirek (6,238) for the final medal spot.

Starting with a season-best time of 7.20 in the 60-meter dash, Uibo recorded five personal bests in his next six events.  He traveled the top distance of his career in the long jump of 24 feet, 3 ¾ inches to start his roll of personal bests.

Following a shot put mark of 46-11, Uibo then went 7-1.50 in the high jump, 8.19 in the 60m hurdles, 17-4.50 in the pole vault and 2:38.51 in the 1000m – all career-best performances.

Uibo was a 2016 Olympian for his native country and had one of the top careers for any Bulldog in history.  He was the 2014 Southeastern Conference heptathlon champion, captured three SEC decathlon titles and two NCAA decathlon crowns and was the 2014 national runner-up in the heptathlon.  Uibo married former Lady Bulldog great and 2016 Olympic 400m gold medalist Shaunae Miller (now Miller-Uibo).

Also of note, current Georgia senior Keturah Orji also made the trip to Birmingham and finished fifth in the triple jump.  The five-time NCAA triple jump champion (two indoors, three outdoors) worked up to a fifth effort of 46-11.50, which is a season-best for the 2018 NCAA leader.

Orji and her teammates will return to action at the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, on March 9-10.  Orji made history at Texas A&M's facility two weekends ago by winning her fourth consecutive SEC indoor triple jump championship.  She will also long jump at this year's Nationals.
