Georgia Welcomes No. 5 Texas A&M for SEC Home Opener

March 10, 2018 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. – Following a shutout of No. 2 Ohio State on Wednesday, the Georgia Bulldogs men's tennis team plays host to another top-ranked opponent at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Sunday, the No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies.

Sunday marks the Bulldogs' first Southeastern Conference competition on their home turf, after opening conference play on the road against No. 18 Florida and No. 29 South Carolina. The Aggies will be the seventh ranked opponent for the Bulldogs in the last eight contests, with four in the top-10.

The last time Texas A&M and Georgia met was in the 2017 regular season finale, when the Aggies bested Georgia 5-2 to clinch a share of the regular season SEC Championship with the Bulldogs. Behind the Wake Forest Deacons with six, Georgia and Texas A&M are the only two teams that total five ranked players in the Oracle/ITA Rankings.

GEORGIA AGAINST TOP-RANKED OPPONENTS
The Bulldogs responded to a two-loss weekend in SEC play by shutting out the second-ranked team in the country, Ohio State. The last time Georgia found success against a top-two team came in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, when the No. 7 Bulldogs blanked the second-ranked North Carolina Tarheels to advance to the Final Four. In regular season play, the Bulldogs' knockoff of Ohio State marks the highest-ranked opponent Georgia has topped since 2014, when the Buckeyes fell 4-3 as the No. 1 team in the country. That year, the Bulldogs were ranked No. 16 at the time –and beat the top squad in a five and a half hour match that was moved indoors due to high winds.

SHAKEUP PRODUCES RESULTS
Following two dropped matches to open SEC play, Georgia switched up the doubles and singles lineups. Walker Duncan moved from his second doubles spot to the first, joining Jan Zielinski for the first time since fall of 2016 to shut out the seventh-ranked team in the nation. The pair finished the fall slate with an 8-1 record, highlighted by a doubles tournament win at the 2016 Southern Intercollegiates in Athens. Nathan Ponwith also shifted from the third to the second doubles courts, teaming with Wayne Montgomery to clinch the doubles point for the Bulldogs. On the third, Alex Diaz and Robert Loeb played together for the first time and were tied at five when doubles play completed.

CONSISTENCY KEY FOR ZIELINSKI
In seven match wins for Georgia, the 28th-ranked junior Jan Zielinski has clinched the match for the Bulldogs on three separate occassions, twice on the fouth court and once on the fifth. The Warsaw, Poland native has dropped only one singles match in dual play this season, helping Georgia with nine wins in dual play. Zielinski also has a 22-7 record overall with a team-best eight wins over ranked opponents. The junior also leads the Bulldogs in doubles, combining for a 17 total wins overall.

DUNCAN UNDEFEATED IN DUAL PLAY
The 14th-ranked junior from Atlanta, Georgia remains undefeated in singles dual play with a 22-7 clip overall, including a team-best eight against ranked opponents. After sweeping the singles field on the fifth court at the ITA National Indoors, Duncan received All-Tournament honors. In doubles, the junior combines for a 15-6 clip as well.

GEORGIA FLEXES DEPTH IN DUAL PLAY
Seven different Bulldogs have posted wins in singles this year, with three different Georgia players taking turns on the sixth court. Behind the top-ranked Wake Forest Deacons with six, Georgia is one of only two teams in the ITA/Oracle Tennis Rankings to total five ranked singles players. Texas A&M also boasts five ranked players in the singles lineup.
