Eagles Even Series at One
February 17, 2018 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. – Late offensive production from Georgia Southern led the Eagles past the Georgia Bulldogs 8-3 on Saturday at Foley Field.
On the mound for Georgia (1-1) was freshman right-hander Emerson Hancock, who cruised through six scoreless innings, giving up only two hits with five strikeouts in his first collegiate start. He was matched by the Eagles' (1-1) Seth Shuman (1-0), who earned the win going six innings before junior Chase Cohen provided three scoreless innings for a save.
Georgia took the lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a Tucker Bradley hit-by-pitch and Keegan McGovern's base hit to put two on with nobody out. Sophomore Cam Shepherd's deep fly-out to right field advanced Bradley to third, followed by a sacrifice fly to center field, this time from junior Michael Curry, that scored Bradley for the 1-0 lead.
Then, junior LJ Talley and sophomore Aaron Schunk notched consecutive singles – the second of which scored McGovern from second, and Georgia picked up a 2-0 margin.
In the seventh inning, sophomore Will Proctor (0-1) made his debut, and the Eagles took advantage of a pair of Georgia throwing miscues to get their first run on the board with two outs. A Steven Curry single and a Mitchel Golden double drove in the next three Georgia Southern runs, supplying the Eagles the 4-2 lead.
Georgia responded in the bottom half of the inning with three consecutive hits. Schunk opened the frame with a double over the head of Eagles first baseman Mason McChorter and into right field, and Sasser followed up with a single. Then, freshman Chaney Rogers came in to pinch hit, notching a base hit to score Schunk and cut the Bulldog deficit to one.
The Eagles tacked on another run in the eighth off freshman reliever Ryan Webb, before they established a comfortable lead in the ninth with three runs and four hits off of senior Blake Cairnes.

On Emerson Hancock's first collegiate start…
"Emerson was great. The encouraging thing is I didn't think he had his best stuff today. I think there's room for improvement there. Six scoreless in your first appearance as a freshman against a really good club, Emerson was outstanding."
On offensive changes from the previous game…
"We had them on the ropes in the first inning. We scored two runs off of Shuman, and we let them settle in a little bit. Once he settled in, he put up some zeroes and did a great job. And then Chase Cohen, who is one of their starters, and they split the game up between the two of them. They smelled that win, and once they took the lead they brought him in there. Tip your cap to them, those two pitchers were really good today and we got to just come out tomorrow and get ready to win a series."
