Georgia’s Comeback Falls Short in 58-51 Loss to No. 7 Maryland

November 24, 2018 | Women's Basketball

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Once down by 15 points, the Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball let a late lead slip away in a 58-51 loss to No. 7 Maryland at the Roberto Clemente Coliseo on Saturday.

Maryland built a 34-19 advantage in the second quarter, before Georgia stormed back, going on a 21-4 run to lead 40-38 in the third. The Lady Bulldogs then went cold, hitting just three shots in the fourth quarter during the 58-51 loss.

Georgia is now 3-3 overall this season and returns home for three-straight games, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 28 against Mercer.

"When you play the No. 7 team in the country that well you want to win," head coach Joni Taylor said. "My heart hurts for these young ladies because it was right there for us. Overall, we got better today, but it hurts not to come away with the win."

It was all Stephanie Jones and Caliya Robinson early on as Jones scored Maryland's first seven points and Robinson tallied Georgia's first six. The Terrapins hit five of their first seven shots as they led 13-9 just five minutes in.

Maryland then heated up from behind the arc, hitting a trio of 3-pointers over the span of two minutes to build a sizable lead. Sophomore forward Malury Bates scored on three-straight trips down the floor to keep the Lady Bulldogs in the game at 26-18 at the end of one.

The Terrapins' lead jumped out to 34-19, but the Lady Bulldogs' manufactured an 11-3 run, capped off by a Cole 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut it 37-30 at the half. Georgia was within seven despite shooting just 31 percent from the floor compared to Maryland's 57 percent.

Georgia went on a big run to take its first lead at 40-38, before Maryland stormed back to take a 47-42 advantage going into the fourth. The Lady Bulldogs then went scoreless for close to six minutes as the Terrapins held on for the 58-51 victory.

Gabby Connally led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points, while Caliya Robinson finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
