ATHENS, Ga.– Following a pair of individual victories in the Lady Bulldogs' win against Arkansas this weekend, University of Georgia sophomore swimmer Courtney Harnish was named Co-Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
In the first competition of the season, the native of York, Pennsylvania posted the best times in the conference, and the fifth-best times in the country, in her 500-yard (4:48.24) and 1,000-yard (9:52.98) freestyle wins on Saturday. Her 18 points guided Georgia to its first win of the season, a 170.5-129.5 rout of the 23rd-ranked Razorbacks in Fayetteville.
The recognition marks the fourth weekly honor of Harnish's career, and the first SEC Female Swimmer honor. The sophomore was named SEC Female Freshman of the Week on three occasions in her first year on the way to a First-Team All-SEC, All-Freshman campaign. Harnish won the SEC title in the 1,650-yard freestyle before earning All-American status at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
After just one season, Harnish also holds two top-10 slots all-time in the Georgia record books for the 500-yard and 1,650 yard freestyle.
The accolade follows the nomination of Georgia Tom Cousins Swimming and Diving Head Coach Jack Bauerle for Coach of the Year by U.S. Swimming. To vote, click here: gado.gs/f3.
The season opener for both the men's and women's teams is slated for Friday, October 26 at Gabrielsen Natatorium at 11 a.m. ET against the Florida Gators. Admission is free.
