October 10, 2018 | Volleyball
BATON ROUGE, La. – Georgia volleyball (12-6, 3-4) fell to the LSU Tigers (6-11, 1-5) on the road Wednesday evening to wrap up a three-match road stretch (22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25).
The loss was the first for Georgia in less than five sets this season.
T'ara Ceasar concluded the match with 15 kills and a career-high 21 digs for her fourth-straight double-double and fifth in the last six matches. Majesti Bass closed the match with a team-leading 16 kills (11 combined in the second half), her third time leading the Bulldogs in the category this season. It was also Bass' first double-digit kill match since the last meeting with LSU on Sept. 21. Rachel Ritchie had 15 kills in the match while tying a season-high three service aces.
Defensively, Kendall Glover led the Bulldogs with 24 digs in the match. Bass contributed five blocks on the net.
Georgia opened the first set with a 5-2 lead; however, LSU responded with five-consecutive points to capture an 8-5 lead. Georgia tied it at nine, then again at 13, but never found another lead in the opening set. LSU was able to ward off any Georgia runs to take the first set, 25-22. Ceasar and Ritchie each had five kills in the set.
Another early run by LSU helped put the Tigers out in front, 4-2. Georgia tied it at four and the Bulldogs and Tigers began exchanging points. Georgia found an 11-10 lead, but LSU responded with five-straight points to go ahead 15-11. With the Bulldogs only down two, 17-15, the Tigers won six of the next seven to bolster a 23-16 lead. Georgia rattled off three-straight, but it was too late as LSU won the set, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ceasar added five kills to tip the double-digit kills mark and tally four-straight double-double.
The third frame remained close to start. LSU went up 8-5 but Georgia quickly turned a 7-1 run to take a 14-10 lead. Up by four at 16-12 LSU called timeout then won the next three points to pull within one and force a Georgia timeout, 16-15. Georgia was able to stay out in front the remainder of the set and stay alive in the match with a 25-22 set three win.
LSU once again used an early run to open an initial lead on the Bulldogs in set four, 7-3. Georgia cut the lead to one, 7-6, but a 6-1 Tiger run that ensued put LSU ahead 13-7. LSU rode the early leads en route to a 25-18 set four win and its first win in SEC play.
The Bulldogs return to Athens for a rematch with Texas A&M on Sunday at Stegeman Coliseum. Georgia fell to the Aggies in College Station on Sept. 23 in five sets. First serve at Stegeman is set for 2 p.m.
