Bulldogs Closing In On Milestone Victory
On Saturday in Knoxville, the Bulldogs will be going for their 800th all-time win in school history. Georgia is in its 124th season and they enter the Tennessee contest with a record of 799-418-54. Georgia ranks 11th nationally in all-time victories. The Volunteers stand ninth on the NCAA all-time list with 832 wins.
In SEC history, the top three teams for league titles are Alabama (26), Tennessee (13) and Georgia (12). The Bulldogs are also looking for their first 5-0 start to a season since 2012. That year, the Vols came to Athens and Georgia held on for a 51-44 victory to improve to 5-0. The Bulldogs would go on to a 12-2 overall record and 7-1 mark in the SEC. They were edged by top-ranked Alabama 32-28 for the conference crown.
Â
Series Record Versus The Vols
Georgia's first SEC road game of the season is also the Bulldogs' second straight conference game during a stretch of eight consecutive league games. Tennessee leads the all-time series with Georgia at 23-21-2 and has won the last one in both Athens and Knoxville, Tenn. However, the Bulldogs have captured victories in five of the last seven matchups, including wins at Tennessee in both 2011 and 2013. The teams first squared off in 1899 and the Volunteers picked up a 5-0 victory. Georgia returned to Knoxville in the teams' next showdown in 1903 and picked up a 5-0 win of its own.
The last five meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less. The Bulldogs last topped Tennessee in 2014 with a 35-32 win in Athens. The Vols recorded wins in 2015 (38- 31) and 2016 (34-31). Georgia's last win in Knoxville was a 34-31 overtime thriller in 2013. In that contest, Marshall Morgan connected on a 42-yard field goal in the extra period to clinch the victory after the Bulldogs had scored a game-tying touchdown (Aaron Murray to Rantavious Wooten) with five seconds left in regulation.

Another Dog Named To Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
Senior DB Aaron Davis has been named to the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Davis is one of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) selected based on their commitment to community service.
Davis, a Finance graduate and native of Locust Grove, Ga., is one of four players from the Southeastern Conference on the FBS 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Georgia leads the nation in Allstate AFCA Good Works Team honorees with 18 since the award's inception in 1992, including four straight and six in the last seven years. Current Bulldog TE Jeb Blazevich was awarded the honor in 2016.
Â
Inside The Numbers
Georgia and Tennessee rank in the middle of the league in Scoring Offense. The Bulldogs are sixth (31.0 ppg) and the Volunteers are eighth (30.2). However in Scoring Defense, Georgia is third (11.5 ppg) while Tennessee checks in at ninth (21.8 ppg). The Vols rank second in Kickoff Returns at 31.9 yards. The Bulldogs enter their fifth game with redshirt sophomore PK Rodrigo Blankenship booming 14 consecutive kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. Tennessee has one of the top Punt Return units ranking third with a 13.6 average. Thanks in part to graduate transfer P Cameron Nizialek, Georgia leads the SEC and is fourth nationally in Net Punting with an average of 44.7. The Bulldogs opponents have negative four punt return yards on four returns.
Georgia leads the SEC in Red Zone Offense going 13-for-13 this year, including 10 touchdowns. The Bulldogs are second in Red Zone Defense holding opponents to a score 70 percent of the time. While Georgia features the dynamic senior duo of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel in the backfield, UT junior John Kelly leads the league at 112.5 yards per game.

Coach to Cure MD
On Saturday, Georgia's coaches, in conjunction with the AFCA, will be wearing arm patches to promote "Coach To Cure MD." This is the 10th anniversary of the program, which raises awareness and money to fund research.

When Georgia looked for a new head football coach after the 2015 season, the arrows pointed to Kirby Smart, longtime University of Alabama defensive coordinator and former UGA player and assistant. After one season, he has not disappointed.
In his first year leading the Bulldogs, Georgia extended its school record to 20 consecutive bowl appearances and posted five fourth-quarter comebacks including wins over No. 8 Auburn and No. 22 North Carolina. He led UGA to an 8-5 final record, which included a victory over TCU in the Liberty Bowl.
He has also made an immediate impact in recruiting circles posting the nation's third-ranked class in 2017 following his first class in 2016 generally considered among the top ten. In addition to his coaching duties, Smart oversees the Kirby Smart Family Foundation, which is focused on being champions in the community by supporting and giving back to needy children and families.
Smart officially came home to Georgia on Dec. 6, 2015. But he still had unfinished business at Alabama, which was chasing a national title. He juggled two jobs for a month until January 11, 2016, when the Tide won its fourth national championship in a seven-year span. Twelve hours later, he was at work in Athens, where he is one of nine head coaches at schools from Power 5 conferences that are coaching at their alma mater.

Fromm Filling In As Eason Sidelined
It's been an eventful start to the collegiate career of true freshman QB Jake Fromm who has been filling in for sophomore Jacob Eason. After Eason went down with a knee injury in the first quarter versus App State in the season opener, Fromm has been at the controls of the Bulldog offense. In that span the Bulldogs are 4-0 and Fromm is 43-for-69 for 650 yards, 7 TDs and 1 INT. Most recently, Fromm posted a career high 201 yards, completing nine of 12 passes with two touchdowns in the win over #17 MSU. His completions against MSU included touchdown strikes of 59 and 41 yards.
Fromm is only the seventh true freshman Bulldog quarterback to start a game, including just the second to do it on the road in his first career start. True freshman Georgia quarterbacks to start include Johnny Rauch (1945), Joe Dupree (1990), Eric Zeier (1991), Quincy Carter (1998), Matt Stafford (2006), Jacob Eason (2016) and now Fromm. Fromm joined Zeier as the only true freshmen to have their first career start on the road. Zeier led #22 Georgia to a 37-17 win over #23 Ole Miss in Oxford. In that game, Zeier was 18-for-30 for 216 yards.
Against No. 24 Notre Dame, Fromm finished 16-for-29 for 141 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT in the win which featured a fourth quarter comeback. Trailing 19-17 with 6:47 left in the contest, Fromm directed a nine play, 63-yard drive to set up the go-ahead field goal. He was 3-for-4 for 45 yards during the drive.
Fromm, a January early enrollee from Warner Robins, Ga., was a Parade All-American in 2016 after passing for 12,745 yards and 116 touchdowns in 46 games for Houston County High School.
Eason had served as the starter since the second game of the 2016 season before his injury. In addition to the comeback over the TCU in the 2016 Liberty Bowl, Eason led the Bulldogs last season to three victories with game-winning drives in the fourth quarter (#8 Auburn, @ Kentucky, @ Missouri).

Chubb, Michel Highlight Bulldog Rushing Attack
The centerpieces of the Bulldog backfield are seniors Nick Chubb and Sony Michel (for a complete look at Chubb's career, see pg. 4). Chubb ranks fifth nationally (first in the SEC) in career rushing yards among active players with 3,795 while Michel is 17th (third in the SEC) with 2,603. The Bulldogs are the only school with two players in the top 17.
Here's the top five active rushing leaders in NCAA FBS:
Â
1. | Royce Freeman (Oregon) | Sr. | 43 games | 4,687 yards | 54 TDs |
2. | Justin Jackson (Northwestern) | Sr. | 41 games | 4,377 yards | 34 TDs |
3. | Larry Rose III (New Mexico St.) | Sr. | 35 games | 3,990 yards | 29 TDs |
4. | Jarvion Franklin (W. Michigan) | Sr. | 44 games | 3,834 yards | 43 TDs |
5. | Nick Chubb (Georgia) | Sr. | 36 games | 3,795 yards | 35 TDs |
*17. | Sony Michel (Georgia) | Sr. | 36 games | 2,603 | 19 TDs |
During the 2017 opening win over App State, the Bulldog duo combined for 183 yards and three touchdowns to pace Georgia's offense. In the road win over #24 Notre Dame, they tallied 136 yards on 26 attempts with one TD. Michel missed the Samford game while Chubb posted a season-best 131 yards and two touchdowns. Versus a #24 MSU team that had boasted one of the nation's top defenses against the rush, Chubb went for 81 yards and another two scores while the Bulldogs finished with 203 yards rushing.
In his career, Michel now has 2,603 yards and that is good for ninth in school history. He went for a career-high 170 yards on 19 carries (8.9 avg.) and a touchdown in last year's game versus Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs are the only school in the FBS to have two active rushers each with more than 2,000 yards. They lead the nation in combined yardage at 6,398.
Chubb and Michel are the first Bulldog teammates to each have 1,000-yard rushing seasons in their career. Michel became the 10th Georgia player in history to rush for more than 1,000 yards while starting six games in 2015.

A Look At The Offensive Line
One of the story lines for the Bulldogs this season was the development of the offensive line. For the first time this year, Georgia used the same starting offensive line in back to back games after starting three separate lineups in the first three games. The Bulldogs have started the same combination at LT, C and RT all year with senior Isaiah Wynn, junior Lamont Gaillard and freshman Andrew Thomas, respectively. Thomas became the first true freshman to start on the offensive line for the Bulldogs since John Theus in 2012.
Junior Kendall Baker started his third straight game at LG versus #17 MSU while redshirt sophomore Solomon Kindley started his second game in a row at RG. However, Kindley sustained an ankle injury versus #24 MSU in the second half and left the game. The guard spots have also rotated between senior Dyshon Sims and redshirt sophomore Pat Allen this season.
Â
An Array Of Targets
A dozen Bulldogs have caught a pass this season but no one has more than eight total catches. Junior Terry Godwin and senior Javon Wims share the team lead with eight receptions each. Godwin has a team best four touchdowns and 214 yards. He made an acrobatic one-handed grab for a five-yard TD at No. 24 Notre Dame. His catch was No. 1 on ESPN SportsCenter's "Top-10 List."
The Bulldogs executed a "flea flicker" to start the game versus #17 MSU and Godwin was on the receiving end of a career-long 59-yard touchdown from Fromm.
Â
Bulldog Defense Set For SEC Road Challenge
Georgia opened up SEC play against the league's top-rated offense as 17th-ranked MSU led the SEC and was ranked ninth nationally in Scoring Offense at 47.7 ppg. The Bulldogs held MSU to a single field goal in the second quarter and just 280 total yards. In 2017, Georgia welcomed back its entire starting defensive unit except STAR Maurice Smith, who completed his graduate transfer season and earned one of the team MVP awards. Four out of the top nine tacklers from 2016 were the Bulldog linebackers and all are back in 2017. Junior DB Deandre Baker worked himself into a starting roll last year and had the team's first interception of the year against MSU along with seven tackles. He is teaming with a veteran defensive backfield in seniors Dominick Sanders and Aaron Davis and first-year starters J.R. Reed and Tyrique McGhee. Sanders also had a pick in the win versus #17 MSU.
During preseason camp, senior DB Malkom Parrish, a two-year starter, went down with a broken bone in his foot. He made his season debut in the win over MSU. Parrish has 108 tackles, including 8.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and four interceptions in 38 games during his Bulldog career.
Â
Productive Start To 2017 For LBs
Junior ILB Roquan Smith is on pace to lead the team in tackles for the second straight season. This year, Smith again has the most tackles of any Bulldog with 27. He led the team in tackles with 95 in 2016. This marked the first time a sophomore led UGA in tackles since 2008 (Rennie Curran, 115).
Senior OLBs Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy wreaked havoc at #24 Notre Dame, as the defense forced their first two turnovers of the year. Carter followed up that performance by notching two more sacks and four tackles in the win over Samford. Carter now has 12.5 career sacks, including three this season. He was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week after posting seven tackles, including a sack for loss of 12 yards, forcing two fumbles and recovering a pair of fumbles against the Irish. Carter ranks third on the team with 17 tackles this season. Bellamy finished with six stops, including a sack and 1.5 TFLs, and forced a fumble at Notre Dame. His sack came on Notre Dame's final possession with under two minutes left and Carter pounced on the ball to clinch the victory.
Â
Experienced Group For New Defensive Line Coach
The Bulldog coaching staff has one new face this season in defensive line coach Tray Scott, and he inherited an experienced unit. The elder statesman is senior nose John Atkins while the other returning starter is junior Trenton Thompson. Georgia ranks third in the SEC in Scoring Defense at 11.5 points/game and also third in Rushing Defense at 97.5 yards/ game.
In Georgia's 20-19 road win at #24 Notre Dame, the Irish totaled only 55 yards on the ground, the least recorded by the Irish since 2011. During the 31-3 rout of #17 MSU, the Bulldogs held their opponent to 177 yards on the ground after they came into the contest averaging 298 yards/game.
Â
Reed Between The Lines
Newcomer J.R. Reed tallied a career best 10 tackles and three pass breakups in the dominating 31-3 win over #17 MSU. He added a blocked field goal against Samford to his early season contributions to the Bulldogs. Reed, whose father Jake played receiver in the NFL for 12 years and whose uncle Dale also played in the League, redshirted the 2016 season after transferring from Tulsa. Reed ranks second on the team with 25 tackles. He also had a sack and a forced fumble in the same play against App State and added a TFL versus Notre Dame.
Â
Sanders Closing In On School Record
Senior safety Dominick Sanders is tied for fifth in school history with 13 career interceptions. One of the Bulldogs he is tied with is Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. Sanders' 13 career picks also ties him for the lead on the NCAA active career list. Sanders is second on the UGA all-time top-10 list with 311 career interception return yards. Sanders snagged his first interception of the year against #17 MSU last week and had a 15-yard return. The Bulldogs now have two picks on the year after junior DB Deandre Baker also had an interception against MSU. Last season, Georgia tied for third in the SEC with 15 INTs.

Nizialek Headlines Punting Game
Graduate transfer Cameron Nizialek (NYE-zuh-lek) arrived in Athens during the preseason and earned the starting punting job. This year, he has posted a 44.5 average on 19 punts, including placing nine inside the 20. Opponents have had four punt returns for -4 yards. Georgia ranks fourth nationally in fewest punt return yards allowed at -1.0.
Nizialek spent his first three seasons at Columbia University where he finished with a degree in Economics. In his career with the Lions, Nizialek averaged 41.3 yards on 149 punts in three seasons. He averaged 44.8 on his punts in 2016.
Â
Blankenship Awarded Scholarship
Redshirt sophomore PK Rodrigo Blankenship earned the starting job before the 2017 opener and received the news before the Notre Dame game in week two that he had been awarded a scholarship. He hit the game-winning 30-yard field goal at the 3:34 mark in the fourth quarter on the road in the 20-19 victory over #24 Notre Dame. Blankenship has a streak of 14 consecutive touchbacks dating back to his final kick versus the Irish. In fact, 19 of Blankenship's 24 kickoffs this year have been touchbacks.
Blankenship emerged onto the scene last year and was named to the Freshman All-SEC team after connecting on 14- of-18 field goals and all of his 26 PATs. Blankenship drilled a game winner at Kentucky last year and booted a career-long 49 yarder versus the Wildcats as well.
Â
Bulldogs Lead As NFL Captains
Six former Georgia players have been named team captains for their respective squads this year: C David Andrews, New England Patriots LB Thomas Davis, Carolina Panthers RB Todd Gurley, L.A. Rams LB Justin Houston, Kansas City Chiefs S Reshad Jones, Miami Dolphins LB Alec Ogletree, L.A. Rams
Â
A Family Tradition
The snapping responsibility for the Bulldogs has been shared by senior Trent Frix and junior Nick Moore. Frix is snapping on field goals and extra points. He is the younger brother of former snapper Ty Frix (2009-12) and the son of former snapper Mitch Frix (1981-82).
Moore has been handling the snapping for punts. He was selected in the 30th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox and played in the organization's minor league system for four years. Moore is in his third season with the Bulldogs.

McBride Named Finalist For NFF
Chapter Scholar-Athlete Award Freshman inside linebacker Nate McBride has been named a finalist for the 2017 National Football Foundation (NFF) Chapter Scholar- Athlete Awards, which annually honor five recipients for their accomplishments as athletes, scholars and citizens at the high school level.
McBride is one of 35 finalists who all graduated from high school in 2017 and are now playing football on the collegiate level. A national committee will select the five honorees, who will be announced Oct. 4. McBride has played in all four of Georgia's wins this year.
If McBride were to be named as one of the five 2017 recipients, he would join Jon Stinchcomb as the only two winners to have matriculated to UGA. Stinchcomb, a 1998 graduate of Parkview High School, was a three-time All-SEC offensive lineman for the Bulldogs, an eightyear NFL offensive lineman and is currently a member of the UGAAA Board of Directors.
