Quick Chat: Jeb Blazevich

This may or may not be the final chapter of what has become a fun and compelling back-and-forth interaction between myself and Georgia senior tight end Jeb Blazevich. Of all the Bulldogs I've interviewed multiple times over my years covering Georgia sports, Blazevich is certainly among my favorites.

On Monday, we sat down for our third Q&A in less than three years. I really enjoy asking him silly questions and he gets a kick out of answering them — the more unusual the better. Our second chat, posted last November, ran so long that it was split into two parts.

(Here are the links to our previous chats: http://gado.gs/7r6, http://gado.gs/7r4 and http://gado.gs/7r5.)

On Monday, Blazevich talked about backup plans for proposing this summer to girlfriend, and Georgia cross country and track runner, Addy Lippitt, trying to change his oil, his perfect Athens day and much more. Here's some of what he had to say:

Frierson: Lately I've been starting these by asking about the most exciting thing you did this summer, but I think most of the folks reading this will know that you got engaged to Addy on top of the Fred Building downtown. What I want to know is, what were your other proposal ideas? Knowing you, you probably had some wacky ones.

Blazevich: The terrible one, and she told me it was terrible, she guessed it, before I could even start to plan anything, on one of our first dates we went to Clocked and then went down Pulaski to that bridge with all the graffiti and stuff. I was like, that would be cool — I could spray-paint "Would you marry me?" on it.

One of her friends reminded me that there's lots of profanity spray-painted around there, so I knew that probably wasn't a good idea.

I tried to get on top of the UGA library but they wouldn't let me. I also was thinking maybe the White Hall Mansion, because it's a cool building, but apparently people live there (laughs). ... After that I figured out I wanted to do it on a roof somewhere, I love views from places like that. I would drive my little scooter around downtown looking at buildings, see one, like, "That's tall," and go in and ask if I could propose on top of it. The Fred said yes and one other place said yes.

Frierson: I thought maybe you'd do it on a hot-air ballon ride, since I know that's something you two have done together before.

Blazevich: There's no room up there. The little basket came up to my hip; if I sneeze, I'm dead. That would be weird, I feel like, plus it's just you two and the hot-air balloon person just standing there.

Frierson: If football had the equivalent of walk-up music, what song would play every time you ran onto the field?

Blazevich: I'm going to say either the national anthem, because I love America, or "Final Countdown" (by Europe) because that's what my fiancee, Addy, is always singing. Or Chris Stapleton's "Nobody To Blame," because I love Chris Stapleton.

Frierson: If you could be among the very best in the world at anything, in sports or something completely different, what would it be?

Blazevich: Golf, because you get to go to all the fancy resorts and the nicest resorts usually have a super-nice golf course. You can play forever, and it's just fun. When we have time off I usually try to go do it, but I'm terrible and I can't spend the time practicing.

Frierson: Where would you go if you were given all the time and money you needed to travel anywhere in the world?

Blazevich: Normandy, France, because I love World War II movies and stuff — I'm not going to say history, because I haven't read a book on it yet — but I would love to go over there and just check it out, take a tour and try to picture what it was like. That would just be insane.

Frierson: What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

Blazevich: Let me think, I had beef tongue in May, in Costa Rica. That wasn't too bad; that was pretty normal.

Frierson: The thing with something like beef tongue is if you just put it on a plate in front of me and didn't tell me what it was, I'd probably dive right in. Knowing it's an animal's tongue is definitely going to make me hesitate.

Blazevich: I was down there and I was like, shoot, I might as well try it. I'm somewhere different, I've never really been out of the country except for one time, I'll give it a shot, and then I just kept picturing a cow's mouth just dripping.

Frierson: You've been in Athens a long time, so what's your perfect Athens, Ga., day?

Blazevich: It's a Sunday, after we just beat anybody and everybody. I go to church; after church me and Addy would probably just go somewhere, like maybe the river spot, somewhere around water, jump in and hang out. Or we'd go out to my friend J.D. Daniels, his farm, and go shoot, because that's always fun for me.

We'd also go play some Putt-Putt in Commerce, because I love Putt-Putt. Then we'd end it by dinner somewhere downtown. That would be the quintessential day.

Frierson: What's something you've tried to master that you still kind of stink at?

Blazevich: (laughs) I don't know if I want to say this: so I've tried to change my oil twice and I can't do it and it's really embarrassing and awkward. Oh, I shouldn't have said that.

Each time I've tried it, something went wrong, like my little wrench would break or something else doesn't work and then it's been an hour and I'm like, forget it, just take it into the shop. But I'm still trying, because I feel like every man should know how to change his oil.

I know how, I just can't do it, which is embarrassing. You literally unscrew two things. That's something (laughs) I can't do and it's embarrassing.

Frierson: What's the best live performance you've ever seen?

Blazevich: I'm going to go with Explosions In The Sky, in Charlotte, the first time I saw them with my brother. They're all instrumental and they're awesome; they just jam out.

When you listen to them on YouTube or your phone or something, it's really mellow, so I didn't know what to expect. Then I went there and it was just insane and so cool. It was either that or Chris Stapleton, because he's my favorite artist, and I saw him in Atlanta in May. That's probably a tie.

(This Q&A was lightly edited for length and clarity.)
