ATHENS, Ga. --- In the first of a three-game series Friday night at Foley Field it was the visiting Vanderbilt Commodores (24-15, 8-8) taking the opening game 8-1 behind a complete game from Patrick Raby.
Georgia starting pitcher Andrew Gist got into a rhythm early allowing just two hits in his first three innings of work as the two teams remained scoreless heading to the fourth inning.
The Commodores and Bulldogs traded homeruns in the fourth inning as Vandy left fielder Stephen Scott broke the scoreless tie with a two-run homerun to right field and Bulldog shortstop Cam Shepherd answered with a solo blast.
Vanderbilt broke the game open in the fifth inning with four runs on three hits including a bases clearing double that the Bulldog right fielder lost in the lights. Commodore leadoff hitter Jaren Kendall added a run on a solo homer to right in the seventh and first baseman Julian Infante followed with his ninth homer of the year in the eighth inning.
The Bulldogs (15-24, 4-12) and Commodores will conclude their three-game series tomorrow with a day-night double header. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the night cap will begin at 6 p.m.

Coach's Corner: Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin On Vanderbilt...
"They have a really good lineup. They have a lot of experience in that lineup. One through nine, they're very solid, and they've got a great approach at the plate. I thought Andrew Gist did a really good job. I thought he threw the ball well, and Vanderbilt's a very good team, and you can't give them too many opportunities, and we gave them an opportunity and didn't make a play."
On the fifth inning three-run double that was lost in the lights...
"That's a big momentum change. He lost the ball in twilight, so what do you do. We put three guys on base, and we've got to keep guys off base as much as possible. It's not an error, just a ball lost in the twilight. Not a lot you can do. It's a tough break. I feel bad for Andrew, because he made the pitch to get out of that inning, and it didn't happen."
