ATHENS, Ga. -- The eighth-ranked Georgia gymnastics team (6-6, 4-3) posted its best score of the season with a 197.325 against No. 6 Alabama, including seven career-best performances in front of a crowd of 10,062 at Stegeman Coliseum on Sunday.
Senior Rachel Schick (bars - 9.925), junior Gigi Marino (floor - 9.95) and sophomore Sydney Snead (vault - 9.95) all won event titles in the 197.700-197.325 loss, and the Gymdogs claimed their best event scores on vault and bars for 2017 in the process.
"I think the team performed really well," said Georgia gymnastics head coach Danna Durante. "I'm excited about the progress on bars and vault. That's where we've been focusing so that was great. We just have to stay consistent through beam, which we've been doing. It's pretty exciting to come away with a season-high score and go `okay, we can still be better.'"
The Gymdogs got a strong start on vault, tying their best score of the season with a 49.275 in the first rotation. Snead took home the top score and the event title with her second-straight 9.95 in the event. All six Gymdogs scored 9.8 or higher while Lauren Johnson and Rachel Dickson tied for second-best on the team with 9.85s. After one rotation, Georgia trailed 49.275-49.4.
Georgia followed with its best bars score this season, a 49.425. The rotation featured career highs from Schick (9.925), Snead (9.9), Morgan Reynolds (9.875) and Hayley Sanders (9.825) as Georgia was able to claim the lead at the midway point, 98.7-98.675.
Alabama was able to regain the edge after the third rotation, where Georgia scored a 49.15 on beam. The Gymdogs were paced by a career-best effort from Vivi Babalis with a 9.9 as well as three scores of 9.825 or better (Sabrina Vega - 9.85, Sanders - 9.825, Dickson - 9.85). Georgia trailed 147.85-148.175 as the teams headed into the final event.
Georgia finished the meet on floor, posting a season-best 49.475. The Gymdogs were spearheaded by Marino, who tied her season best of 9.95 for the third-consecutive meet. Following closely behind were Dickson (9.9) and the trio of Reynolds, Vega and Snead, who all hit 9.875s.
Georgia closes out the regular season on Saturday (March 11) with the home finale against Utah. The Senior Day/Alumni Day festivities will also include the final edition of G.R.O.W. for 2017.
