"Redesigned" Dogs Head To Bama
The Georgia Bulldogs travel to Tuscaloosa on Thursday night for the second half of a home-and-home series with Alabama's Crimson Tide. The game will tip at 7:00 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN2.
Georgia is currently 15-12 overall and 6-8 in the SEC. That league mark is somewhat deceiving considering the Bulldogs are the only team to play Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina - the trio atop the league standings for most of January and February - twice. Georgia is 6-2 in games against the rest of the SEC.
The Bulldogs will be without Yante Maten, who has been the SEC's second-leading scorer for much of the 2016-17 campaign. Maten, one of 10 players on the final watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as the nation's premier center, suffered a sprained right knee 95 seconds in to last Saturday's game against No. 13 Kentucky.
"Obviously, our team was mostly built around Yante so we will have to redesign some things, but we aren't going to be able to reinvent ourselves completely this late in the year," Mark Fox said on Tuesday. "Our other guys are going to have to step up and play a little bit bigger role, and we will have to be a little smarter and stay out of foul trouble and be very efficient with how we play."
Before and after Maten's injury there were signs certain Bulldogs were ready to increase their contributions down the regular-season's home stretch.
In his first career start two Saturdays ago in Knoxville, freshman Tyree Crump scored 13 points - including five in stretch of 17 seconds that pushed a one-point lead to 70-64 - in a 76-75 victory over Tennessee.
In Georgia's next outing versus Mississippi State, sophomore E'Torrion Wilridge made a significant impact in his first-ever start with the Bulldogs. Wilridge dished out a career-high four assists in a career-most 29 minutes. He also grabbed a season-best six rebounds. Wilridge then topped that MP tally with 32 minutes of action against Kentucky.
Against Kentucky, sophomore Mike Edwards posted his first career double-digit point tally against SEC competition with 10 points, doing so in a career-most 34 minutes.
Senior J.J. Frazier is now the Bulldogs' active scoring leader at 17.3 ppg overall and 19.4 ppg in SEC play. Among SEC scoring leaders, Frazier ranks fifth overall and second in stats for SEC games only.
Frazier has been spectacular of late, with a pair of 20-point second halves in Georgia's last three outings. He led the Bulldogs back from a 14-point, second-half deficit in Knoxville. Against Kentucky, Frazier poured in 22 points after intermission en route to a season-most 36 points.
Juwan Parker has been Georgia's third-leading scorer for the majority of the season but has stepped up his production in league play. Parker averaged 8.0 ppg in non-conference play but is contributing 10.9 ppg in SEC action. That has upped his season average to 9.6 ppg.
Alabama is 16-10 overall and 9-5 in league games, including an 80-60 win over Georgia on Jan. 25 in Athens.
Braxton Key averages a team-high 12.0 ppg for the Tide, while Dazon Ingram chips in 10.4 ppg. A balanced offensive attack features six more players averaging between 5.6-9.3 ppg.

Series History With The Tide
Alabama leads the overall series between the Crimson Tide and the Bulldogs, 94-50, including a 52-13 mark in Tuscaloosa.
In Georgia's most recent trip to Coleman Coliseum, the Bulldogs secured a vital 66-65 overtime victory on Feb. 21, 2015.
Georgia trailed by one point with under 30 seconds remaining in overtime, but Cameron Forte hit a jump shot with seven seconds on the clock to put the Bulldogs ahead by one. Alabama took the ball up the court and had an opportunity to take the lead, but Yante Maten blocked the shot attempt out of bounds to seal the win.
Last month in Athens, Yante Maten scored 20 points as Georgia dropped an 80-60 decision at Stegeman Coliseum.
Maten led the way for Georgia with his seventh 20-point output of the season. Juwan Parker added 10, his seventh double-digit performance in eight SEC games on the year.
"I didn't do a good enough job getting our team ready to play," said Mark Fox, who was ejected after receiving two technical fouls near the end of the first half. "I was concerned about our spirit coming into the game because of the last game (at Texas A&M)."
The Bulldogs trailed 41-27 at the break, and Alabama jumped out to 54-34 lead with 14:25 left. Georgia was then able to hold the Tide to just two field goals until under a minute to go, but was unable to cut the lead to less than 10.
Last Time Out
Despite J.J. Frazier's season-best, 36-point effort and a late Georgia lead, the Bulldogs were edged by No. 13 Wildcats 82-77 last Saturday evening at Stegeman Coliseum.
Frazier's 36 points registered as the most this year against Kentucky. Juwan Parker and Mike Edwards added 10 points apiece. Derek Ogbeide snatched team-high 11 boards, his 11th double-digit rebounding game and sixth in Georgia's last eight outings.
With 2:22 left, a Frazier 3-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 71-69 lead. Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox answered with a layup, but a pair of Frazier free throws put Georgia back on top.
Fox notched the game for the 12th time at 73-73 with 1:09 remaining. The Bulldogs' next possessions fell empty and the Wildcats capitalized to gain the lead for good.
Georgia went without its leading scorer for the virtually the whole game as Yante Maten suffered a right knee injury in the second minute and did not return.
The Bulldogs shot 51-percent from the floor, while the Wildcats sported a 43-percent clip shooting. However, Kentucky outrebounded Georgia 41-26.
"Obviously, without Yante we had to play a little different at times, and quite frankly, we just didn't rebound the ball in the second half," Mark Fox said.
A Challenging SEC Slate
Georgia's league schedule is no doubt the SEC's most challenging. The conference's unbalanced slate has teams facing five schools on a home-and-home basis.
Georgia, which was No. 57 in the Feb. 22 edition of the NCAA's RPI, is the only SEC school scheduled to play the three teams atop the league standings - Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina.
All five of the Bulldog's two-timing SEC foes were ranked in the top 80 of the most recent edition of the RPI - No. 8 Florida, No. 10 Kentucky, No. 30 South Carolina, No. 75 Alabama and No. 77 Auburn.
A Challenging SEC Slate...Take II
Georgia's 6-8 SEC record includes six losses top-25 opponents.
In two of those - at Florida and at Kentucky - the Bulldogs led with less than 10 seconds left in regulation before losing in overtime.
Three more games - both dates with South Carolina and the Kentucky game in Athens - were decided in the final minute.
Milestones Mount For Frazier
J.J. Frazier joined Georgia's top-10 career scoring leaders during his 36-point outburst against Kentucky.
Frazier inched past D.A. Layne into the No. 10 spot on the Bulldogs' career scoring ledger. Entering Thursday's game, Frazier had scored 1,455 points, just 14 away from No. 9 Sundiata Gaines.
Two weeks earlier at South Carolina, Frazier moved onto Georgia's top-10 leaders ledgers for both career assists and steals.
Frazier is now one of three Bulldogs - along with Vern Fleming and Gaines - to own a spot in the top 10 of UGA's points, assists and steals lists.
Frazier's point production against the Wildcats represented his third 35-point performance at Georgia, along with 37 points at Mississippi State in 2014-15 and 35 versus Georgia Tech a year ago.
Frazier and Litterial Green, Georgia's all-time scoring leader, are the only two Bulldogs to score 35 points three times for UGA.
Ogbeide is Top Boarding Bulldog
Derek Ogbeide inched past Yante Maten to become Georgia's leading rebounder during the Tennessee game on Feb. 11.
Ogbeide has been dominating on the glass of late. He has six double-digit rebounding tallies in the Bulldogs' last eight games and an average of 10.0 rpg over that span. That has helped push his season average to 7.4 rpg.
Ogbeide is averaging an even more impressive 8.2 rpg in SEC play, which ranks third among league leaders.
Parker Back, Production Up
Juwan Parker has enjoyed a successful return to action after missing the last season and a half with the Achilles injury.
Parker has 25 starts - missing the Morehouse to rest his Achilles and coming off the bench at Tennessee - and is averaging 9.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 1.9 apg. Those are considerably higher his career marks entering this year of 4.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg and 0.9 apg.
Parker also has set new career highs for points (17 vs. both Florida & Vanderbilt), boards (11 vs. G. Washington), assists (five vs. G. Washington) and minutes (40 vs. Florida).
The Final Exams break seemed to be good for Parker.
In his first 58 games with the Bulldogs from the beginning of his freshman year through a Dec. 4 matchup with Marquette, Parker reached double figures in the scoring column just once.
In 19 games since Georgia returned to action after the 10-day Finals break, Parker has produced 13 double-figure scoring outputs, including doing so in 11 of the Bulldogs 14 SEC outings.
After averaging 8.0 ppg in non-conference play during November and December, he is averaging 10.9 ppg in SEC action.
Parker started the first 14 games for Georgia's 2015 NCAA Tournament team before suffering the Achilles injury. He played limited minutes in four contests during the rest of that season but was out all of last year and redshirted after undergoing surgery in the summer of 2015.
Frazier Puts On A Show
Mark Fox succinctly stated the reason Georgia rallied from a 14-point, second-half deficit at Tennessee to win two Saturdays ago.
"We got it done because J.J. Frazier loves playing for this school," Fox said. "J.J. just refused to give in, and he did what seniors do: he led the fight."
Tennessee quickly expanded a two-point halftime lead to 53-39 with 15:13 remaining at Thompson-Boling Arena.
When things looked bleak, Frazier took over the game.
A Frazier layup at the 14:55 mark ignited a 19-5 run in which he had a hand in every single point. Frazier scored 11 points on his own and dished out three assists that resulted in eight more digits for the Dogs. That surge knotted the score at 58-58 with 8:21 left.
Frazier's heroics didn't stop there.
His layup with 4:09 left gave Georgia its first lead of the second half, an assist for a Tyree Crump 3-pointer with 2:26 remaining put the Bulldogs up by six and a three-point play with 21 seconds on the clock put UGA up by five.
Dogs & Cats Lead SEC
Georgia and Kentucky have been the SEC's winningest and most consistent hoops programs of late.
Georgia and Kentucky are the only two SEC programs to reach the 20-win mark each of the past three seasons.
UGA and UK also are the only league teams to post double-digit SEC win totals during each of the past three campaigns.
In addition, the Bulldogs and the Wildcats are the only teams to advance to the semifinals of the 2014, 2015 and 2016 SEC Tournaments. No other SEC team has reached the semis more than once during that span.
Dogs Getting Defensive...Again
A year ago, Georgia was one of - if not the - best defensive teams in the SEC, leading the SEC in field goal percentage defense in conference play at .385.
UGA also was one of two teams - along with Kentucky - to hold its SEC foes under 40 percent shooting.
This season, Georgia is third FG defense, both overall (.407) and in SEC play (.411).
Freshmen Start, Make Marks
Tyree Crump and Jordan Harris became the 10th and 11th freshmen, respectively, to start for the Bulldogs in the last six seasons of Mark Fox's tenure.
The tandem from Southwest Georgia joined five current teammates on that list: senior Houston Kessler; juniors Yante Maten and Juwan Parker; and sophomores Mike Edwards and Derek Ogbeide.
Harris made his first start against Louisiana on Dec. 14 and got the nod for 12 straight games before a slight illness prior to the Texas game on Jan. 28 limited him in practice leading up to the game and put Turtle Jackson in the starting five against the Longhorns.
Harris' PT has jumped since the early season. He averaged 11.6 mpg in UGA's first 10 games - with a DNP in the opener at Clemson - but logged 21.7 mpg in the next 16.
Crump got his first start at Tennessee on Feb. 11 and made the most of that occasion with 13 points.
Crump opened the scoring for Georgia with a long 3-pointer at the 19:14 mark of the first half. He also made several critical plays as the Bulldogs rallied from a 14-point, second-half deficit to victory. Most notably, he scored five straight points over a span of 17 seconds as Georgia pushed a one-point lead to 70-64 with 2:26 left.
Thank You Sir May I have Another
J.J. Frazier is approaching yet another significant statistical markers.
Frazier has 46 3-pointers this season. With four more, he would become the first Bulldog ever to post 50 3-pointers and 100 assists three times. Frazier and G.G. Smith are the only two Georgia players to do so multiple times among the six who have accomplished the feat as outlined below.

Just Call Him A Basketball Player
Yante Maten was named as one of 10 players on the final watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as the nation's top center on Feb. 3.
That news came after Maten was on the 25-player preseason watch list for the Karl Malone Award as the premier power forward.
Maten was the only player in the nation who switched from one position to another on the watch lists for the national position player of the year awards administered by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Maten was asked to if he considers himself a forward or a center.
"I consider myself a basketball player, let's just put it like that," Maten stated. "Wherever they want to try to put my game in, that's really up to them. But I just play basketball how I play basketball."
The Next Dr. J?
Rumors that redshirt junior Juwan Parker will receive his doctorate before he leaves the University of Georgia cannot be confirmed nor denied.
Parker was named to the College Sports Information of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America All-District team announced on Feb. 9 and is now one of 40 finalists for the national Academic All-America squad.
Parker arrived in Athens in the fall of 2013 with 24 hours of credit already on his transcript via AP exams and dual enrollment classes at the University of Tulsa, where his father is a law professor.
Parker earned his bachelor's in Management from UGA's Terry College of Business in December 2015 and began working on his master's last January. He is on pace to receive his master's this summer, with a full season of eligibility remaining at Georgia.
Dogs Among Top Scoring Duos
Guard J.J. Frazier and forward Yante Maten are one of the nation's top guard-forward scoring combos.
In stats through games of Feb. 20, those Bulldogs comprised the ninth-best inside-outside scoring tandem in the nation - and were the only duo from a Power 5 conference - among teams with two scorers in the top-250 nationally as outlined below.
| Top Guard-Forward Scoring Combos | ||||

Maten Consistent Performer
Yante Maten has been a model of consistency since the start of last season.
In 61 games during his sophomore and junior years, Maten has 54 double-digit scoring outputs (with 21 20-point and four 30-point games), grabbed double-figure rebounds 16 times and posted 15 double-doubles.
32+34=Solid Production at the "5"
Georgia's sophomore tandem of No. 32 Mike Edwards and No. 34 Derek Ogbeide is giving the Bulldogs very solid production on the low block.
The classmates are combining to contribute a double-double of 11.2 points and 11.2 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs. Edwards and Ogbeide are combining to log 41.3 minutes per game, primarily manning the '5' spot.
Ogbeide is averaging 6.9 ppg and 7.4 rpg in 22.6 mpg. Edwards is at 4.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg and 18.7 mpg.
A Quartet of Bitter Pills
Georgia won its first two SEC road games at Auburn and Ole Miss before suffering four painful league losses away from Athens.
The Bulldogs have been agonizingly close to victory in each outing - at No. 23 Florida, Texas A&M, No. 8 Kentucky and No. 19 South Carolina. That includes a one-point decision in College Station, a two-point setback in Columbia and OT outings against UF and UK.
All told, the Bulldogs led for 91:56 of the 130 minutes played during the first three contests - 35:11 at Florida, 37:10 at Texas A&M, 19:35 at Kentucky. Georgia trailed for just 27:25 in those three games combined.
The Bulldogs led for 11:16 at South Carolina, a game featured eight ties and no less than 18 lead changes.
In addition, the Bulldogs made more field goals at a higher percentage against the Gators, Aggies and Wildcats as outlined on the following page. Though South Carolina did make two more shots from the floor, Georgia outrebounded the Gamecocks but a healthy 36-28 margin.

Frazier, Maten Top Millennium Mark
Earlier this season, J.J. Frazier and Yante Maten became the 47th and 48th Bulldogs to reach 1,000-point career scoring plateau.
Frazier reached the milestone with a 3-pointer at the 17:57 mark of the first half against UNC Asheville on Nov. 14. Maten joined him with a successful free throw with 9:41 remaining in the Bulldogs' game against South Carolina on Jan. 4.
Bulldogs have reached the millennium mark at a relatively steady clip over the past several seasons.
Frazier and Maten are the seventh and eighth Bulldogs to top 1,000 career points during Mark Fox's tenure, joining Charles Mann (1,411 points), Trey Thompkins (1,396), Kenny Gaines (1,324), Nemi Djurisic (1,123), Travis Leslie (1,099) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (1,013).
Frazier Grabs UGA Career FT Mark
J.J. Frazier became the Bulldogs' career record holder for free throw percentage with his third of four FTs made in Georgia's win at Georgia Tech on Dec. 20.
The senior from Glennville, Ga., opened the season at No. 2 among UGA's career leaders in free throw efficiency at 81.1728 percent. That trailed only Jerry Eppling's effort of 82.1561 percent (221-of-269) from 1968-70.
Frazier has connected on 123-of-142 (86.6 percent) of his trips to the line this season, which has raised his career percentage to 82.9326 (386-of-466).
Turtle For 3...Almost Exclusively
Nineteen of William "Turtle" Jackson's 33 field goals this season have been 3-pointers.
Jackson's 3-point heavy tally is not surprising. Last season, 10 of his 13 field goals were 3-pointers and his shooting percentage was better from beyond (33.3 percent) than overall (28.3 percent).
For his career, 29 of Jackson's 46 FGs have come from farther than 20-feet, 9-inches from the basket. That's 63.0 percent of his makes from the floor.
Dogs Earn 500th "W" At Stegeman
Georgia's Dec. 17 win over Charleston Southern represented the Bulldogs' 500th all-time victory at Stegeman Coliseum.
Originally named the "Georgia Coliseum," the venue was christened on Feb. 22, 1964, when a standing-room-only crowd of 13,200 witnessed the Bulldogs beat Ga. Tech, 81-68. The first game in the Coliseum actually was an undercard, an 86-75 win by UGA's freshman team over its counterparts from Tech.
The Bulldogs went on to finish 3-1 at the Coliseum during the 1963-64 season, posting additional wins over Vanderbilt and Florida State (with a young assistant coach named Hugh Durham on the Seminoles' bench).
Georgia is in its 54th full home campaign in the arena. The "Georgia Coliseum" was renamed "Stegeman Coliseum" on March 2, 1996. The namesake is Herman J. Stegeman, who coached basketball, baseball, football and track & field and also served as Director of Athletics at UGA during his tenure from 1919-39.
Fox Garners Career Victory 250
Mark Fox notched his 250th win in 13 seasons as a head coach with the Bulldogs' Nov. 14 victory over UNC Asheville.
Fox was 123-43 in five seasons at Nevada. He was 127-104 in his eighth campaign in Athens when he reached the milestone.
All told, Fox has produced nine 20-win teams and advanced to the postseason nine times - including four occasions at Georgia - during his head coaching career.
A HomeGrown Roster
Nine of the 15 players on Georgia's 2016-17 roster are Peach State prep products.
That list includes eight of the 14 active players on the Bulldogs' roster - seniors J.J. Frazier, Houston Kessler and Brandon Young; sophomores William "Turtle" Jackson, Connor O'Neill and Derek Ogbeide; and freshmen Tyree Crump and Jordan Harris.
In addition, Christian Harrison, a walk-on transfer from Troy who is sitting out this season, played at Woodward Academy.
