EUGENE, Ore. --- The No. 6-ranked Georgia men's golf team recorded an 11-stroke improvement during the second round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday.
Playing the Eugene Country Club's par-70, 7,014-yard layout, the Bulldogs finished the day at 4-over 284. That moved Georgia to 15-over 575 for the tournament and into a 5-way tie for 15th place with Auburn, Clemson, Kentucky and San Diego State.
Following Sunday's round, the field will be cut to the low 15 teams for Monday's final stroke play loop. The top eight teams after 72 holes will qualify for match play, which starts on Tuesday.
Georgia will enter Sunday's round only five shots behind eighth place as Illinois and Texas are tied for seventh at 10-over 570. Vanderbilt has the overall team lead at 3-over 563, followed by Southern Cal (5-over 565), Arkansas (6-over 566), and Oregon and LSU (both at 8-over 568).
"We finished stronger today and that was nice to see," said Chris Haack, who was chosen Saturday as one of the finalists for the Dave Williams Award, which is presented annually to the national coach of the year. "We've got to keep the ball in the fairways and give ourselves opportunities. We need to stay patient and know we've got two more days to get this done. We'll come out Sunday and play our game. We can't control what anybody does. We'll come out Sunday ready to go."
Senior Lee McCoy and junior Greyson Sigg paced the Bulldogs on Saturday as each signed for an even-par 70. (Sigg had an eagle and two birdies over his last four holes and joked that he wanted to keep playing.) Senior Sepp Straka and sophomore Zach Healy both added a 2-over 72. Freshman Tye Waller had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 6-over 76.
McCoy stands sixth in the individual race at 1-under 139, four shots behind Southern Cal's Justin Suh. Straka moved to 1-over 141, followed by Sigg at 6-over 146, Healy at 9-over 149 and Waller at 14-over 154.
"We're getting there," Healy said. "We played better today, but it's still not completely what we want. We need to come out Sunday and play aggressively, eliminate the mistakes and put together a good round."
