EUGENE, Oregon --- Georgia fired a 3-over 291 in Saturday's second round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships at the Eugene Country Club. The Bulldogs are at 13-over 589 through 36 holes and in 16th place in the team field.
Freshmen Jillian Hollis and Bailey Tardy both shot even-par 72s to lead Georgia. The Bulldogs other counting scores were a 73 from Rinko Mitsunaga and a 74 from Harang Lee. Mary Ellen Shuman posted an 81, UGA's drop score on the day.
"We had four really solid rounds of golf," head coach Josh Brewer said. "In these conditions and playing at a championship level, they're very good rounds. We're close to getting those special rounds that make a team round great. We just need to stay patient. We're going to make our putts. We've done it all year long. Maybe we're waiting for the last four days to do so instead of the first round."
The Bulldogs teed off from No. 10 and played the back side of the layout first on Saturday.
Hollis birdied No. 10 and No. 11 but turned at 1-over following birdies at No. 13, No. 17 and No. 18. She moved back to even with a birdie at No. 7
Tardy spent much of her day in red numbers. She birdied No. 10 and remained a 1-under until a bogey at No. 14. Tardy birdied No. 17 and No. 2 to move to 2-under but lost one of those strokes with a bogey at No. 6 and another with a closing bogey at No. 9.
"We've got to stay patient and positive," Brewer said. "We're one of the best teams in the country. We're in a good spot going into day three. We know we can overcome a few mistakes, and we've proven we can make birdies in bunches. We just need to stay patient and trust that they will come."
No. 2 Southern Cal bolted to the top of the team leaderboard after shooting an 8-under 280. The Women of Troy are 7-under, five shots better than No. 13 Washington.
Dewi Weber of Miami is the individual leader at 9-under 135, one shot ahead of Tennessee's Anna Newell For Georgia, Hollis is tied for 38th at 146, both Lee and Mitsunaga are tied for 54th at 147, Tardy is tied for 80th at 149 and Shuman is 129th at 158.
Georgia will be paired with Florida and North Carolina on Sunday teeing off from 3:00-3:44 p.m. ET from No. 10.
Following the third round, the competition will be cut to the top-15 teams and the top-nine individuals who are not among those teams. A fourth round of stroke play will be contested on Monday, with the NCAA individual medalist and the eight teams advancing to match play determined afterward.
The match play bracket will feature quarterfinals and semifinals on Tuesday and the championship match on Wednesday.
