Greene, Shockley to be Honored at SEC Championship

Birmingham, Ala. ---Former University of Georgia quarterbacks and Southeastern Conference Championship Game Most Valuable Players David Greene and D.J. Shockley will be recognized along with the other 22 former recipients of the award at the 25th SEC Championship game on Saturday, December 3.
A majority of the former MVPs will be in attendance and honored at different points during the 2016 SEC Championship Game in addition to participating in the SEC FanFare prior to the game on Friday and Saturday.
Greene led the 11-1 SEC East Division Champion Georgia Bulldogs into the 2002 SEC Championship Game against the 9-3 SEC West Division Champion Arkansas Razorbacks. The then-ranked No. 4 Bulldogs cruised past the No. 22 Razorbacks 30-3 for the 11th conference championship in Georgia history and first conference championship game victory. Greene, of Snellville, Ga., accumulated 237 yards on 17-of-29 passing with one touchdown, a 20-yard pass to Benjamin Watson in the fourth quarter. The 2002 Bulldogs finished 13-1, No. 3 in the AP poll, after they advanced to the Nokia Sugar Bowl and defeated 16th-ranked Florida State 26-13.
Shockley, a freshman on the 2002 team, commanded the 2005 Bulldogs to a SEC Championship in his first year as a full-time starter. Entering the game, the then-ranked No. 13 Bulldogs (9-2) were underdogs to the No. 3 LSU Tigers (10-1), but Georgia prevailed 34-14 on three touchdowns by Shockley. The College Park, Ga. native went 6-of-12 for 112 yards through the air with two first quarter scoring strikes to receiver Sean Bailey, while also adding a 7-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter. Again the Bulldogs drew the Sugar Bowl, however, Georgia fell this time in a hard-fought game to West Virginia 35-38.
In addition to celebrating the former MVPs, the SEC will continue its tradition on recognizing a 'Legend' from each of the SEC institutions, a class of 14 former stars who excelled on the field and helped write the rich history of the sport at their respective institutions. Georgia's representative this year is former offensive lineman Jon Stinchcomb who was a first team All-America recipient on the 2002 team. Stinchcomb was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, a member of the AFCA National Good Works Team for community service, named the New Orleans Saints Man of the Year in 2008 and earned a Super Bowl Championship ring on the Saints' 2010 team.
