The Washington, D.C., chapter of the UGA Alumni Association -- affectionately known as the D.C. Dawgs -- recently won the
Capital Alumni Network softball championship. Made up of teams from 70
alumni associations in the DC area, the tournament spanned two weekends at
the NASA Goddard Space Flight Complex in Greenbelt, Md.
After winning all 14 games games during the regular season, most of which take place on the National Mall in the shadow of the White House and various national monuments, Georgia entered the tournament as the second overall seed.
Having also won the championship in 2012, the DC Dawgs become the fifth team (and only the second team outside of Maryland and Virginia) to win multiple championships.
The DC Dawgs are also the only team in the league's 19-year history to finish the entire season undefeated, at 22-0. The road to the tournament championship included victories over Cornell, in-state rival Emory, Carnegie Mellon, Notre Dame, Penn State, and local powerhouse Catholic University. Of the eight D.C. Dawgs tournament victories, five came via the 12-run mercy rule.
The championship game was a match up against Pittsburgh, the only other undefeated team in the league and the overall top seed, as well as the team with the top-rated defense in the league. Georgia jumped out to a quick six-run lead in the top of the first, and would never relinquish that lead on the way to a 20-8 victory.
Next spring, the D.C. Dawgs look to join James Madison and Virginia Tech as the only teams with three tournament championships.
