May 06, 2015 | General
ATHENS, Ga. --- Thirty University of Georgia student-athletes from 11 different teams visited D.H. Stanton Elementary School on Wednesday morning as part of the "UGA Day -- Learn, Play, Excel" initiative.
Deputy Director of Athletics Carla Williams and women's basketball head coach Joni Crenshaw, as well as volleyball player Gaby Smiley and football players Keith Marshall and Quincy Mauger, spoke to the students about the importance of working hard, setting goals and respecting others. The UGA student-athletes and staff also distributed Georgia backpacks, t-shirts and posters to the children.
This marks the fifth-consecutive year that Georgia has partnered with an Atlanta-area school to share the message. "UGA Day -- Learn, Play, Excel" was first held at Miller Grove High School in Lithonia in 2011. Georgia has also visited Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary in East Point (2012), Charles R. Drew Charter School in Atlanta (2013) and Berta Weathersbee Elementary in LaGrange (2014).
