BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Georgia women's golf team fired its best round of the 2014-15 season on Saturday, a 1-over 289, in the second round of the SEC Championships at Greystone Golf and Country Club.
The Bulldogs enter Sunday's final round in ninth place, the same spot they occupied entering Saturday. However, Georgia was six shots from eighth following the first round but is within seven shots of fifth with 18 holes remaining.
The Bulldogs' entire playing five was solid on Saturday. Harang Lee led the way with a 1-under 71, while Georgia also counted a pair of even-par 72s from Manuela Carbajo Ré and Rocio Sanchez Lobato and a 74 from Sylvie Brick. In addition, Sammi Lee shot 77,
"I'm very excited," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It was our low round of the year, and we continue to get better each day. When I looked after nine holes, I think our worst score was even par. That was all five of our golfers. We were in it. It has been a long time since we've had that happen. We were under par for a good bit of the day and everyone in the lineup helped us get there. I expect us to go out and play as well or even better tomorrow."
Play began with a shotgun start and the Bulldogs teeing off on holes No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10.
Harang Lee was even through her first eight holes but birdied No. 16, No. 17, No. 1 and No. 2 to move to 4-under on the day. Just a quickly, she bogeyed No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 before finishing with a pair of pars.
"I was playing very well," Lee said. "I was 4-under. Putting was great. Everything was great. At the end, I couldn't close out the round. I made some mistakes. I made three bogeys in a row so I finished 1-under."
Carbajo Ré and Sanchez Lobato were extremely consistent. Neither was lower than 1-under or higher than 1-over during their rounds.
Brick's loop equaled her career-low effort established earlier this month in the final round of Seton Hall's Pirate Invitational.
"I think I played within myself a little bit more today," Brick said. "I knew what I was working with. I didn't try to do anything fancy. I was just trying to hit the fairway, hit the green and putt. If I didn't make the putt, two-putt and get out of there. I just tried to keep it very simple."
Georgia's previous best round this season was a 3-over effort in the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate in the fall.
On the individual leaderboard, Harang Lee is tied for 14th at 145, Carbajo Ré is tied for 16th at 146, Sanchez Lobato is tied for 29th at 149, Sammi Lee is tied for 58th at 158 and Brick is tied for 63rd at 160.
Texas A&M shot an SEC-record 11-under 277 to move from a three-way to sole possession of the team lead. The No. 13-ranked Aggies are at 570, nine shots ahead of No. 2 South Carolina. Georgia is at 595, one shot behind No. 19 Florida, two strokes from No. 9 Arkansas and three shots shy of No. 4 LSU.
For the third consecutive day, the championships will begin with a 10 a.m. CT shotgun start on Sunday. Georgia will open play at the same locations as Saturday -- No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 -- and will be paired with Arkansas and Florida. Live scoring is updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
