Bulldogs Complete 7-0 Sweep of Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The sixth-ranked Georgia women's tennis team completed a 7-0 sweep of the No. 46 Arkansas Razorbacks (13-10, 2-6 SEC) on Friday afternoon, earning the team its fifth-straight SEC win and keeping the Bulldogs in the hunt for the league's regular season title.
Junior Silvia Garcia clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court 4 as Georgia improved to 14-4 on the season and 7-1 in SEC play.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start on the afternoon when senior Lauren Herring and freshman doubles teammate Ellen Perez clinched the doubles point for Georgia with an 8-5 win over Shannon Hudson and Yuliya Lysa on court 1. The win not only gave the visitors a 1-0 lead, but also propelled Herring into a top-3 place in the school record books for combined career victories.
Tied with Cameron Ellis at 223 wins, the nation's eighth-ranked player was then able to claim the No. 3 spoton Georgia's all-time wins list for herself with a 7-5, 6-2 singles win over Lysa on court 1 later in the match. Sitting aloneat 224combined wins, Herringneeds just sixmore wins to move into a tie with Chelsey Gullickson forthe No. 2 spot. Maho Kowase set the overall record last season at 245 combined wins.
Other highlights on the afternoon included Caroline Brinson winning her team-leading 12th dual match of the season with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Mia Jurasic on court 6, and Perez almost not dropping a game in her 6-0, 6-1 win over Makenzie Craft on court 2. Freshmen Kennedy Shaffer (2-6, 6-3, 1-0) and Hannah King (6-1, 6-2) were also victorious on the afternoon, with the former joining Herring and Brinson as one of three Bulldogs to reach double digits in dual match singles wins this spring.
"I thought everybody did a great job today," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "We looked good in both singles and doubles, and it felt great to get another SEC win on the road. We're now looking forward to playing in Columbia [Missouri] on Sunday, and are hoping to return to Athens with another win under our belts as we prepare for our last two home matches of the regular season."
The match between Georgia and Missouri will take place at the Mizzou Tennis Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs will then return to Athens to close out the home portion of their regular season schedule with matches against Ole Miss and Mississippi State next weekend.
