Spencer Embracing Family Atmosphere Both On And Off The Court
By Sam Hendricks
For Megan Spencer, family has always been atop the priorities list. Being a redshirt junior on the volleyball team, she feels she is free to express herself and embrace the family atmosphere that the team provides, but it hasn't always been that way.
A native of Overland Park, Kansas, Spencer grew up as a triplet, and says she wasn't always able to be an individual or express herself.
"It was different. It was hard," Spencer said. "I think we viewed it as not cool when we were younger. We just didn't get to establish our own person, and a lot of people would put us together into one."
Despite the fact it wasn't always easy, she credits her sisters for pushing her and attributes some of her success on the volleyball court to them.
Her sister Sarah played volleyball for a while with her, but stopped once she got to high school. Sister Emily was a basketball player, but saw how much fun and success Megan was having on the court, so she picked it up her junior year of high school.
"My sister Emily has the better mindset and better work ethic. She was always in the gym and wanted to do everything," Spencer said. "I was more like I just want it to be game day, and I just want to show up and play, and I don't want to go through all the hard work."
Emily's mindset helped her sister get motivated and used the familial competition to work harder as well as appreciate the game, which eventually led Megan to play Division I volleyball at Georgia.
With Megan at Georgia, Emily went to Savannah College of Art and Design also on a volleyball scholarship, and Sarah stayed close to home and chose Kansas State. Although Spencer doesn't get to see her biological sisters frequently, she has found a home here in Athens.
"We're like family, but its different in the fact that we don't fight or anything like that on the team," Spencer said. "If you get in a fight with your actual sisters, it doesn't matter because they're still your sisters. But on the team we don't have any drama like that."
After averaging 1.74 kills per set and recording 39 blocks last season, Spencer looks to help her volleyball family to another successful season in 2015. So far this year, Spencer is a staple to the Bulldog lineup. She is one of the team's offensive leaders with 113 kills for 1.95 per set while closing in on her blocks total for last year with 35.
The Georgia volleyball team will return to action on Sunday when they take on Missouri at 1:30 at the Ramsey Center.
