Georgia Finishes 10th At Cougar Classic
September 16, 2014 | Women's Golf
Sept. 16, 2014
The 23-team field included 10 teams that finished the 2013-14 season ranked among the nation's top 25.
Manuela Carbajo Ré, Harang Lee and Isabella Skinner signed for matching 71s on Tuesday, while Georgia also counted a 78 from Amira Alexander and dropped Rocio Sanchez Lobato's 79.
"Manuela birdied four of her first five holes and then hung in there the rest of the day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Harang picked up a birdie every three or four holes and stayed in the red. Bella was having a good day and all of a sudden birdied her 16th hole and eagled her 17th hole to go under par. It was nice for them to do it in different ways. It was a great day and a good week for us as a team."
Overall, Skinner was the Bulldogs' top individual finisher, tying for 38th at 5-over 221. Alexander and Carbajo Ré tied for 42nd at 222, Lee tied for 59th at 226 and Sanchez Lobato tied for 71st at 228.
Skinner, a freshman, started her round with a bogey at No. 11 but gained that stroke back with a birdie at No. 18. She was even through 14 holes after a bogey at No. 1 and a birdie at No. 3. A bogey at No. 7 was followed by a birdie at No. 8 and an eagle-3 on the par-5, 523-yard No. 9. There, Skinner holed out from 103 yards out. She bogeyed her final hole of the day at No. 10 to wrap up her first under-par round for the Bulldogs.
Lee teed off from No. 12 and played her first seven holes at 3-under with birdies at No. 14, No. 15 and No. 18. She gave one of those shots back with a bogey at No. 1, but birdied No. 3 to move back to 3-under through 10 holes. Lee then bogeyed No. 6 and No. 10 before completing her loop with a par at No. 11.
Carbajo Ré began the day at No. 11 and promptly birdied her first three holes. She then bogeyed No. 14, birdied No. 15 and bogeyed No. 17 to reach the "turn" at No. 18 at 2-under. After nine consecutive pars on the front side, Carbajo Ré ended her day with a bogey at No. 10.
Arkansas captured the team title after finishing at 846, seven shots ahead of UCLA. Duke's Sandy Choi secured medalist honors by shooting 11-under 205, one stroke better than the trio of Bronte Law from UCLA, Alison Lee from UCLA and Sierra Sims from Wake Forest.
Four different Georgia golfers posted under-par rounds in Charleston and the fifth carded a 1-over tally.
"It was nice to have three scores in the red today and four different golfers in the red this week," Brewer said. "We've done it in qualifying all fall and it tells this group that any one of them is capable of going out and shooting a low number for us."
The Bulldogs will return to action in three weeks when they travel to Chicago to compete in Northwestern's Windy City Collegiate on Oct. 6-7 at the Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill.
"We certainly would've liked to have finished better than 10th, but the field here was better than an NCAA Regional," Brewer said. "We played with some of the best teams in the country and proved that we can compete with them. We've got a few things to work on but it should be a fun couple of weeks of practice. You can tell they're excited and confident right now."
