Bulldogs Stand 10th In Nike Invitational
October 06, 2014 | Men's Golf
FORT WORTH, Texas --- The No. 7-ranked Georgia men's golf team found itself down a man early in the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational on Monday and wound up in 10th place after two rounds.
The Bulldogs finished at 38-over 598 with loops of 20-over 300 and 18-over 298 at Colonial Country Club, the site of the PGA Tour's Crowne Plaza Invitational. Oregon has the team lead at 8-over 568.
Junior Lee McCoy, currently the nation's top-rated player according to Golfweek/Sagarin, had to withdraw early in the first round with an injury. McCoy had placed first and second individually in Georgia's season-opening events.
McCoy's exit meant the Bulldogs' remaining four players would be counting the rest of the way. Sophomore Greyson Sigg finished the day at 5-over 145, nine shots in back of Oregon's Thomas Lim. Junior Sepp Straka checked in at 6-over 146, followed by sophomore Parker Derby at 13-over 153 and sophomore Jaime Lopez Rivarola at 14-over 154.
"Lee's back started bothering him and it was unfortunate that he couldn't keep going," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "Because of that, we didn't have any margin for error. We got behind the eight ball early and weren't able to make up any ground. But every day, good or bad, is a learning experience. We'll dust ourselves off and take our best swing at it tomorrow."
The Bulldogs will tee off between 9:45 and 10:21 a.m. on Tuesday with their counterparts from Ohio State and Arizona for the final round. Live results can be found at GolfStat.com.
