Black Posts Shutout Saturday To Force Game Five
October 25, 2014 | Baseball
ATHENS----Down two games to one in a best-of-five series, the Black team responded with a 3-0 victory Saturday at Foley Field.
Juniors Ryan Lawlor and David Sosebee provided four scoreless innings apiece before the bullpens took over in the six-inning contest. Senior Jared Cheek pitched the final two innings to pick up a win while senior Zach Waters got the loss. Both relievers struggled with their command, accounting for three walks each.
In the bottom of the fifth, senior catcher Brandon Stephens drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a base hit by freshman Mitchell Webb and later scored on an RBI-single by freshman Henry Rowling. The Black team pushed across two more runs on an RBI-groundout by junior DJ Smith and sophomore Mike Bell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
“I was trying to be selective leading off the fifth because I haven’t had many walks this fall,” Stephens said. “I’d been catching the whole game so I knew the umpire’s strike zone.”
The Black team was more vocal Saturday throughout the game compared to the Red dugout.
“We talked before the game about brining more energy because we needed a ‘W’ today,” Stephens added. “It helped the way Ryan pitched too. He was as good as he’s been all fall. David was sharp for the Red team too.”
The deciding game five of the Red-Black Fall World Series will be Sunday at 1 p.m. Sophomore Robert Tyler will start for the Black squad while the Red team will counter with freshman Ryan Avidano.
Fans please note the seating area of Foley Field is closed due to construction. The only viewing area available is behind the outfield fence, which must be accessed by entering through the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
