ATHENS-----The University of Georgia Athletic Association will partner with Drew Charter School in Atlanta to present "UGA Day - Learn, Play, Excel" on Wednesday, May 8 from 10-11:30 a.m.
Students in grades 2-5 will enjoy presentations that focus on such topics as education, leadership, anti-bullying, respect for authority and the value of participation in athletics. Presenters from UGA are scheduled to include football coach Mark Richt, men's basketball coach Mark Fox and women's basketball coach Andy Landers.
In addition, at least 20 current and former UGA student-athletes from 11 different sports will participate, lending a younger perspective to the program.
Part of an overall initiative for community outreach in the Metro Atlanta area, this marks the third straight year the UGA Athletic Association has partnered with an Atlanta school to talk with children about the importance of education and college attendance, respecting authority, anti-bullying and perseverance.
"UGA Day - Learn, Play, Excel" was held at Miller Grove High School in Lithonia in 2011 and Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary School in East Point last year.
In 2011, billboards featuring recent Georgia graduates were put up within the Metro Atlanta-area, and elementary school principals, university officials, and alumni were invited to a panel discussion at Paschal's restaurant that focused on promoting education and the University of Georgia.
