Three Bulldogs Named To Academic All-District At-Large Team

ATHENS-----Georgia student-athletes Andrew Gemmell and Shannon Vreeland of swimming and Lauren Herring of tennis have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team.

Gemmell, Vreeland and Herring are now eligible for the Capital One Academic All-American Team, which is presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Gemmell, a native of Wilmington, Del., boasts a 3.94 GPA while majoring in Economics. Gemmell placed fifth in the 1,650 freestyle at the 2013 NCAAs and ninth at the SEC Championships. He qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games by winning the 1,500-meter freestyle at the United States Trials. The recipient of the Joel Eaves Award as the male student-athlete with the highest GPA entering his senior year, Gemmell has been chosen for several academic honor rolls by the SEC and UGA and is a two-time member of the College Swim Coaches of America Association (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team.

Vreeland, a native of Overland Park, Kan., has a 3.84 GPA in economics and international affairs. She helped guide the Lady Bulldogs to the 2013 NCAA title and was a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay that broke American, U.S. Open and SEC records. Vreeland also won a gold medal as a member of the 800-meter freestyle relay at the London Games. She is a two-time member of the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team.

A native of Greenville, N.C., Herring helped lead the fourth-ranked Bulldogs to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. She has compiled a 35-6 record and is ranked sixth nationally. Herring, who played No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs, has 22 wins against ranked opponents and 30 doubles victories. Herring has a 3.90 GPA in sociology and psychology, and she is a past recipient of the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award.

The first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
