BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Georgia opened the 2013 SEC Women's Golf Championships with an 18-over 306 on Friday, leaving the 18th-ranked Bulldogs in third place on the team leaderboard.
Rocio Sanchez Lobato paced the Bulldogs with a 2-over 74. Georgia also counted a pair of 77s from Manuela Carbajo Ré and Kailey Walsh and a 78, the score posted by both Emilie Burger and Amira Alexander.
"Everybody hung in there," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We had solid rounds from everyone and the conditions were really difficult. If we continue to get consistent play from everyone, hopefully on Sunday we'll be exactly where we want to be."
A heavy rainstorm forced a four-hour delay, with teams eventually hitting the course beginning at noon. While the rain passed, blustery conditions continued throughout the day with temperatures in the low-50s and a steady wind.
None of the 60 golfers finished with a par-or-better score. Kentucky's Sarah Harris and Ole Miss' Stani Schiavone are atop the individual leaderboard at 1-over 73. Sanchez Lobato is among four golfers tied for third at 74, while Carbajo Ré and Walsh are tied for 18th and Burger and Alexander are tied for 27th.
"The course was playing really hard," Sanchez Lobato said. "It was wet. It was long. You just have to be patient and not get frustrated and be ready when you have the chance to make a birdie."
LSU grabbed the first-round lead with a 303, a shot better than No. 2 Alabama. Georgia is tied with Kentucky, Mississippi State and South Carolina, followed by No. 8 Vanderbilt at 309, Tennessee and Missouri at 312, No. 6 Arkansas at 313, No. 7 Florida at 315, Ole Miss at 317, No. 24 Texas A&M at 318 and Auburn at 321.
Saturday's play will be delayed for two hours due to a frost advisory. The Bulldogs will tee off beginning at 12:40 p.m. ET and will be paired LSU and Alabama. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
