Bulldogs Remain Third At SEC Women's Golf

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Freshman Amira Alexander played the final two holes at 3-under to give the No. 18-ranked Georgia women's golf team a boost en route to a 17-over 305 in Saturday's second round of the SEC Women's Golf Championships.
The Bulldogs went from a four-way tie for third to sole possession of that position on the team leaderboard at Greystone Golf and Country Club. Georgia is at 611, 14 shots back of No. 2 Alabama in first with 18 holes to play.
"We wanted to have a chance come Sunday," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We'd like for the deficit to be a few shots less but we have a chance. I still feel like our best golf is out there. We just have to go out tomorrow and maybe a little more aggressive because we want to win the championship. Finishing third or fourth really won't be remembered, so we'll play aggressive and try to make some more birdies."
Alexander finished with a 1-over 73, Georgia's low loop of the day. The Bulldogs' other counting scores were a 75 from Manuela Carbajo Ré, a 77 from Emilie Burger and an 80 from Rocio Sanchez Lobato. Kailey Walsh signed for an 82.
Alexander turned at 3-over following bogeys at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 8. She dropped to 4-over with a bogey at No. 11, about the same time her family arrived at the course.
With her parents, John and Tracy, her brothers, Damari and John, and her grandmother, Gloria Burton, watching on, the freshman from Alpharetta then played the final six holes at 3-under. She birdied No. 13 but bogeyed No. 15. A birdie two at No. 17 was followed by an unlikely eagle at the 439-yard No. 18.
Alexander's tee shot hit a cart path in the middle of the fairway and then bounced over a creek into the fairway. That left her with a 143-yard, 8-iron into the green.
"The eagle was totally unexpected," Alexander said. "My teammates told me that I couldn't hit it far enough to get in the hazard. I hit my driver and it was a great drive. It hit the cart path and I thought it went into the water. When I got up there I saw it was a great shot and I thought to myself 'Why not just stick it on the green and make an eagle?"
Alabama's Stephanie Meadow shot 69 to move atop the individual field at even-par 144. For Georgia, Alexander is tied for 10th at 151, Carbajo Ré is tied for 13th at 152, Sanchez Lobato is tied for 18th at 155, Burger is tied for 21st at 155 and Walsh is tied for 42nd at 159.
The Crimson Tide shot 293 on Saturday, the only sub-300 tally of the tournament to date. The Tide leads Mississippi State by 12 shots. Trailing the Bulldogs are Kentucky and LSU both at 614; South Carolina at 615; No. 8 Vanderbilt at 618; No. 6 Arkansas and Tennessee both at 621; No. 24 Texas A&M and Auburn both at 627; Missouri and No. 7 Florida both at 633; and Ole Miss at 638.
Sunday's final round will be played in twosomes instead of the traditional threesomes. Georgia will be paired with Kentucky beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
