ATHENS, Ga. - Fifth grade math students from Woodward Elementary School in Brookhaven, Ga., are set to visit the University of Georgia campus on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Chris Conley of the football team will serve as a guest speaker for the group, in addition to providing a tour of Stegeman Coliseum for the students.
The students have followed SEC football teams throughout the season and used their newly acquired math skills to analyze each team's performance. Woodward teacher Scarlett Childers taught the students to use these skills to graph, create fractions, decimals and percentages, make tables and even learn geography through SEC football statistics. Next semester, students will apply these skills to analyze SEC basketball and baseball teams.
The tour of the UGA campus is Childers' way of rewarding her students for their hard work and effort throughout the semester.
"I hope this experience helps my children visualize their goals as students so they have the desire to work hard in school and want to achieve," said Childers. "This new way of learning and partnership with UGA will open their eyes and minds to what they can have if they work for it."
The students will learn about admissions and college life, meet an athletic statistician, tour Sanford Stadium and Stegeman Coliseum with Conley and meet students who grew up in communities similar to their communities.
To raise funds for their field trip, students sold pizza and held events at a Brookhaven Laundromat.
Pat Allen, Director of Community Relations at UGA, and Rosa Arroyo-Driggers, Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions for Diversity and Access, are coordinating the visit.
"We know that our staff and student athletes will be inspired by these fifth graders and vice versa," said Allen.
