ATHENS, Ga. - University of Georgia student-athletes across all sports volunteered at the Special Olympics Prom held at the Classic Center on Thursday evening from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Special Olympics at UGA is organizing this year's "Great Gatsby"-themed prom, which features a variety of craft activities and dancing. The event was put on to celebrate the athletes who participate in the Athens Special Olympics.
"Student-athletes are very involved with UGA Special Olympics and we love to volunteer at events," said Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Co-President & Community Service Chair Julia Hemingway.
"I really enjoy the event because it is a great way to spend time with the Special Olympians and celebrate prom with them," added Hemingway. "We escort them into the prom when their names are called, and it's a really special moment of recognition."
"Special Olympics Prom is a great community service opportunity where we get to hang out with the Special Olympics athletes in a social environment," said former SAAC president and current senior tennis player Kate Fuller. "We love to have UGA student-athletes come hang out and escort a Special Olympic athlete down the red carpet. It's so worth our time."
