ATHENS, Ga.----Two members of the University of Georgia nutrition staff recently added another qualification to already impressive resumes. Maria Breen and Justin Klein both passed their specialty board exams meaning they may now use the designation RD and CSSD.
In order to become board certified by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) must successfully meet rigorous specialty practice requirements and pass a nationally administered examination. Board certified specialists in Sports Dietetics Work as Registered Dietitians for a minimum of two years applying evidence-based nutrition knowledge in exercise and sports. They assess, educate, and counsel athletes and active individuals. They design, implement, and manage safe and effective nutrition strategies that enhance lifelong health, fitness, and optimal performance.
The Commission on Dietetic Registration's mission is protecting the nutritional health and welfare health of the public through dietetics certification. CDR currently awards seven separate and distinct credentials.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals and is empowering members to be the nation's food and nutrition leaders and optimizing the nation's health through food and nutrition.
Breen has spent nearly her entire career to this point at Georgia since she began her undergraduate in Athens in 2003. She achieved a double major undergraduate degree in Dietetics and Consumer Foods and a Master's of Science degree in Food and Nutrition. She has served in several positions at the university but came to the UGA athletics nutrition staff in August of 2010.
Klein joined the Georgia staff in July 2012 having spent time with three different organizations as a clinical dietician. He graduated with both his undergraduate degree and master's degree from the University of Oklahoma, completing his education in 2008. He then spent time at Select Specialty Hospital, All American Home Care, and Longview Regional Medical Center before coming to Georgia.
