LONDON - Former University of Georgia volleyball player Elizabeth Reid recorded her first point as an Olympic athlete in Great Britain's 3-0 loss to Italy earlier today.
Great Britain kept it close with the Italians in the first set, but came up just short in a 27-25 loss.
Subbing in the second set, Reid recorded a serve and played the next 23 points of the set. With her team trailing 9-5, Reid notched a spike (kill), earning her first point of the 2012 London Olympics and cutting Italy's lead to three points at 9-6. Great Britain was unable to overcome the Italian lead, as Italy went on to win the second set 25-12. Great Britain dropped the final set of the match by the same score.
Reid and Great Britain will play again on Aug. 3 at 11:45 a.m. ET against the Dominican Republic. Currently the team is in fourth place of Group A with two points earned in three matches played, trailing Russia, Italy, and Japan. The Dominican Republic is in last place in the group having failed to earn a point yet.
