ATHENS, Ga. --- Members of the University of Georgia Athletic Association will be making a trip to Atlanta's Andrew and Walter Young YMCA Friday, July 27, at 11 a.m., as part of the "Learn, Play, Excel" (LPE) program. LPE is part of a larger community outreach program in Metro Atlanta.

Between 400-600 elementary school-aged children are expected to attend the event, which will include speeches by Georgia senior football player Cornelius Washington, former women's basketball standout and high school player of the year Keisha Brown, football assistant head coach Rodney Garner, men's basketball program coordinator and UGA letterman Jonas Hayes, and women's basketball associate head coach Joni Crenshaw.

With a "Back To School" theme, the children will receive school supplies and discuss topics such as the importance of education, leadership, setting goals, and anti-bullying.

"Through these programs, we have the opportunity to impact the community and our schools by promoting education and college attendance," said Carla Williams, Georgia's executive associate athletic director. "We also want the children to think about the University of Georgia as not only their University, but also as their first choice for college when that time comes."

Dr. Walter Young will also be in attendance. The YMCA of Metro Atlanta is named for him and his older brother, Andrew - former mayor of Atlanta, Georgia congressman, and ambassador to the United Nations. The YMCA is located 2220 Campbellton Rd, SW, Atlanta, 30311.
