Five Bulldogs Named to Academic All-District At-Large Team

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia student-athletes Kat Ding of gymnastics, Wendy Trott and Andrew Gemmell of swimming, and Wil Spencer and Sadio Doumbia of tennis have been named to a Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team.

Ding, Trott, Gemmell, Spencer and Doumbia now are eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America Team, which is presented by the College Sports Information Directors of the Year.

Ding claimed the NCAA title on the uneven bars and floor exercise this season, becoming just the second gymnast in NCAA history to repeat as the national champion on bars. An advertising major with a 3.58 GPA, Ding was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in each of the last four years and has been named to the UGA Dean's List.

Trott was a three-time NCAA and four-time SEC champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The Capetown, South Africa, native recently earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, was chosen as the Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned the Elite 89 Award as the swimmer at the NCAA meet with the highest GPA (3.97). She represented South Africa at the 2008 Olympics and recently qualified for the 2012 Games in London. Trott majored in International Affairs with a minor in French.

Gemmell, a native of Wilmington, Del., boasts a 3.96 GPA while majoring in Economics. At the 2012 NCAAs, Gemmell placed fifth in the 1,650 freestyle and 12th in the 400 individual medley. He recently won the men's 10-kilometer race in the Open Water National Championships. Gemmell has been chosen for several academic honor rolls by the SEC and UGA.

Spencer posted a team-best 19 wins over ranked opponents and was ranked in the top 11 of the singles poll all season. He earned the 2011 Southeast Region Osuna Award for leadership and sportsmanship and was picked as the ITA Southeast Region Senior of the Year. The native of Ponce de Leon, Fla., is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Doumbia led the Bulldogs with five clinched matches this year among his 32 singles wins. A two-time SEC champion and two-time All-SEC selection, the Toulouse, France, native has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and to the UGA Dean's List. Doumbia is a member of the UGA Math Club, Insurance Society and the professional business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi.
