ATHENS, Ga.--After moving its season mark to 38-13 and its conference record to 15-10, the University of Georgia softball team ranked No. 11 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and in the ESPN.com/USA Softball polls released Tuesday.
California remained as the No. 1 ranking in the USA Today/NFCA poll with Arizona State behind at the second spot. Alabama takes the third slot followed by Oklahoma at No. 4 and Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 5.
California also claims the No. 1 spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll while Arizona State grabs No. 2. Oklahoma follows at No. 3 as Alabama and Tennessee round out the top five.
Georgia went 3-1 this past week with a win over Kennesaw State and taking the series 2-1 over LSU. Junior Tess Sito led the team with nine hits, including tying a career high in hits as she went 4-for-5 at the plate against the Owls. In the circle, Sito gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out 10 on her way to two wins for the week.
Senior Erin Arevalo also set a career high in strikeouts in game one at LSU. During the longest outing of her career, Arevalo struck out 15 batters in her 15 innings of work. She carried a no-hitter until the 11th inning when the Tigers put a double on the board; however, Arevalo would retire 13-straight batters, including four strikeouts swinging, to end the game with the 1-0 win.
The Bulldogs return to action in Athens for their final regular-season series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5 against Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. The final game will take place on Sunday, May 6 at 1:30 p.m.
