ATHENS, Ga. ---- Special Olympics at UGA along with the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be hosting the third annual Home Runs for Hometown Rivals at Foley Field on Monday, April 30 at 6 p.m. The event will serve as a fundraiser to benefit Athens-Clarke County Special Olympics.
Over 80 Special Olympians will participate in the game and will be partnered with UGA student-athletes representing all sports that will be volunteering with the Special Olympians throughout the game.
Gates open at 5 p.m. and tickets are $5 each or five tickets for $20. Last year, the event raised $2,000 in ticket sales, concessions, donations and corporate sponsorships for Athens-Clarke County Special Olympics.
Special Olympics at UGA assists Athens-Clarke County Special Olympics by providing volunteers for programs to support students with intellectual and physical disabilities. The organization hosts events throughout the year in addition to raising awareness about issues affecting those with disabilities.
"We hope that this year's game will be bigger and better than the year before,” said Adreana Rickett, co-president of Special Olympics at UGA. “While we hope to make a nice donation to Clarke County Special Olympics, we really just want the kids to have a good time, which is really what it's all about.”
Athens-Clarke County Special Olympics is a non-profit organization that receives financial support through Athens-Clarke County Parks and Recreation, but is mainly funded through events hosted by Special Olympics at UGA. The athletes from the Athens-Clarke County Special Olympics are between elementary and high school age who have a range of intellectual and physical disabilities.
