GAINESVILLE, Fla. ---The No. 18 Georgia Lady Bulldogs (20-7, 9-5) fought hard but came up short and were defeated the Florida Gators (17-10, 7-7), 61-57, Sunday afternoon.
Jasmine James led Georgia with 15 points, four steals and three rebounds. Anne Marie Armstrong recorded 12 points and seven rebounds, while Meredith Mitchell notched 10 points and seven rebounds. Jasmine Hassell put up eight points and pulled down four rebounds.
"We had too many wasted opportunities offensively," said head coach Andy Landers. "We had all the opportunities we needed and we fumbled balls and missed easy shots. We let them get to the offensive boards too much and we gave up far too many threes."
The Lady Bulldogs were out-rebounded 42-32, but controlled the turnovers and steals, committing 11 turnovers and 11 steals to Florida's 16 turnovers and two steals.
Georgia connected on 84.6 percent from the charity stripe, which is a conference high for the Lady Bulldogs.
Georgia took an early 6-1 lead, but Florida refused to let the Lady Bulldogs get too far ahead. With 13 minutes on the clock, Florida pulled within one, 9-8. Over the next five minutes, the lead changed five times and neither team led by more than one.
The Lady Bulldogs took the final lead of those five minutes and stretched their advantage to six at 25-19 with 3:30 left in the period. The Gators then experienced an 8-0 surge to end the half and go up 27-25.
In the first half, Georgia shot 40 percent from the field, while the Gators connected on 33.3 percent.
The game remained close in the second half, with neither team leading by more than five. There were nine ties and 15 lead changes in the contest.
Florida took its largest lead since 19:32, when it went up 46-42. Georgia tied the score, 46-46, just over a minute later with 8:28 left.
With 1:03 on the clock, the Gators went up 57-54. A pair of Florida free throws and a Mitchell trey pulled Georgia within two, 59-57, with 3.3 seconds remaining. Another trip to the charity stripe for the Gators saw the score increase one last time, 61-57.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action when they host the Ole Miss Rebels at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23.
