Georgia/Florida week! It's always big and always important and this season it can be one of the most big (did I really write most big??) and it is one of the most important! If the Bulldogs win, they'll control their own fate in the SEC East. It will be tough - Florida is ranked #2 in the current BCS poll. I remember back in 1985 when Florida was ranked #1 in the polls. Georgia was led by two freshmen running backs that season as well. The Dawgs dominated that game 24 to 3. So who knows what will happen? That is why we will watch and/or listen or read about all the action.
So for all you passionate fans, here are some more notes, nuggets and tidbits of information all things Georgia Bulldogs, statistically speaking of course. For the most complete information on a specific upcoming game please check out the individual sport and game you are looking for on www.georgiadogs.com and for even more statistical insights you can follow me on twitter @dave_mc_stats.
And now for the extra stuff...
Football ---
This is the 91st meeting between the Bulldogs and Gators (even though Florida says it's the 90th.) The majority of the games have been played in Jacksonville, but they haven't all been played there. Recently two games were played at the school's home sites during the years when the stadium was under renovation for the Jaguars. Games were played in other sites as well. Here's Georgia's record against Florida in each site this game was played at.
| UGA Record | Last Meeting | |
|---|---|---|
| Jacksonville, Florida | 41-38-1 | 2011 |
| Athens, Georgia | 4-1 | 1995 |
| Savannah, Georgia | 0-1-1 | 1930 |
| Gainesville, Florida | 1-1 | 1994 |
| Tampa, Florida | 1-0 | 1919 |
| Macon, Georgia | 1-0 | 1904 |
Aaron Murray had a huge game vs Kentucky. He completed 30 of 38 passes for 427 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was also named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week. The 30 completions were the most since Cory Phillips vs Georgia Tech in 2000. That was before Mark Richt was in charge. Here are the top-5 most completions in a game under Mark Richt.
| Aaron Murray | 2012 vs Kentucky | 30 completions |
| David Greene | 2004 vs Purdue (2003 season) | 27 |
| David Greene | 2002 vs Northwestern State | 26 |
| David Greene | 2001 vs Florida | 25 |
| Matthew Stafford | 2008 vs Tennessee | 25 |
The 427 yards passing was the 4th most in Georgia history, no matter who the head coach was. Here is the Top 5.
| Eric Zeier | 1993 vs Southern Miss | 544 yards |
| Eric Zeier | 1994 vs South Carolina | 485 |
| Eric Zeier | 1994 vs Vanderbilt | 441 |
| Aaron Murray | 2012 vs Kentucky | 427 |
| Eric Zeier | 1993 vs Auburn | 426 |
In this past game against Kentucky, Murray broke the Georgia all-time record for most career touchdown passes with 75, passing (pun intended - GET IT?) David Greene. He also passed another Georgia quarterback Eric Zeier in another category (most games with 4 or more touchdown passes.) Here are players that have at least 4 or more touchdown passes at least twice in Georgia history.
| Aaron Murray | 5 times |
| Eric Zeier | 4 |
| David Greene | 3 |
| D.J. Shockley | 2 |
Since Murray had a great game it is obvious that some of the wide receivers had great games. Two of the receivers that did were Tavarres King and Malcolm Mitchell. Both of these Bulldogs had nine receptions. That many receptions have happened just six times under Mark Richt. Here are those times.
| Michael Johnson | 2002 vs Auburn | 13 receptions |
| Mohamed Massaquoi | 2008 vs Georgia Tech | 11 |
| Fred Gibson | 2001 vs Kentucky | 9 |
| A.J. Green | 2010 vs Auburn | 9 |
| Tavarres King | 2012 vs Kentucky | 9 |
| Malcolm Mitchell | 2012 vs Kentucky | 9 |
The 188 receiving yards by King is in the top-10 all-time by a Georgia player in a single game. King is also number one on that list. Here is that top-10 list.
| Tavarres King | 2012 vs Michigan State (2011 season) | 205 yards |
| Fred Gibson | 2001 vs Kentucky | 201 |
| Lamar Davis | 1942 vs Cincinnati | 198 |
| Terrence Edwards | 1999 vs Utah State | 196 |
| Pat Hodgson | 1963 vs Miami | 192 |
| Mohamed Massaquoi | 2008 vs Kentucky | 191 |
| Hason Graham | 1994 vs South Carolina | 188 |
| Tavarres King | 2012 vs Kentucky | 188 |
| Hines Ward | 1996 vs South Carolina | 184 |
| Mohamed Massaquoi | 2008 vs Georgia Tech | 180 |
Volleyball ---
The Georgia volleyball team dominated Missouri on Wednesday and swept the Tigers 3-0. That's revenge for their earlier meeting this season, when the Bulldogs were swept 3-0 back on September 30th. It was the 4th straight conference win for Lizzy Stemke's bunch. It was also the 7th time Georgia had a 3-0 sweep (last season, Georgia had just 4.) Here are those seven times.
August 25th vs Troy
August 26th vs Georgia State
August 31st vs Florida International
August 31st vs Florida A&M
October 12th vs Auburn
October 21st vs Alabama
October 24th vs Missouri
Soccer ---
Georgia concluded their season on Thursday with a loss to Tennessee in Knoxville 3-2. Goalkeeper Ashley Baker added 9 saves to her already impressive total and ends with 112 saves on the season, That's the 4th highest total by any Bulldog in a season. She also ends with 305 career saves and is 1 of just 4 Bulldogs to reach 300 in a career. Here are the top-5 single-season save numbers by a Georgia Bulldog.
| Nicole Williams | 1999 | 170 saves |
| Nicole Williams | 2000 | 122 |
| Michelle Betos | 2008 | 117 |
| Ashley Baker | 2012 | 112 |
| Ashley Lindley | 2002 | 109 |
Bulldogs on the Web.com Tour ---
In August, Russell Henley was ranked 88th in earnings. Since then, he has had six top 10 finishes, including wins in two of the last three tournaments. Earlier he won the Chiquita Classic, and last week winning the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open Presented by Planters. With one more tournament remaining, Henley currently stands in 3rd place on the money list.
Bulldogs in the NFL ---
With Ray Lewis out of the lineup for the Ravens, former Bulldog Dannell Ellerbe will be one of the main players that Baltimore will look for to make some tackles. Ellerbe stepped up last week, racking up a career-high 12 stops against the Houston Texans. Since 1994, a former Bulldog has notched 12 or more tackles in a NFL game 30 times. Randall Godfrey had the most with 17, but here is the amount of times each player had at least 12. Some of these players could have had more than 12 before 1994, but I couldn't get that info (sorry.)
| Will Witherspoon | 7 times |
| Randall Godfey | 6 |
| Mo Lewis | 5 |
| Champ Bailey | 2 |
| Todd Peterson | 2 |
| Thomas Davis | 2 |
| Jermaine Phillips | 2 |
| Sean Jones | 2 |
| Terry Hoage | 1 |
| Boss Bailey | 1 |
| Reshad Jones | 1 |
| Dannell Ellerbe | 1 |
Drew Butler has continued his kicking, and is now punting for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last week he punted twice for an average of 47 yards which included a 55-yard blast. Butler is just a rookie, but it made me wonder which former Bulldogs have the most career punts in the NFL. Here is the top-5. (I can go back further than tackles, all the way to 1939.)
| Bobby Walden | 974 career punts |
| Spike Jones | 592 |
| Bucky Dilts | 285 |
| Joe Geri | 200 |
| Charley Trippi | 196 |
Bulldogs in the Majors ---
The World Series is underway and the Detroit Tigers are taking on the San Francisco Giants. There are no Bulldogs on these rosters, but there is a historical connection dating back over 100 years. Hughie Jennings led the Tigers to their first three World Series (1907-09.) Detroit lost them all, and Jennings not only managed, but he played a little as well. Earlier in his major league career he had another job on the side-he was the first official head coach for the Georgia baseball team. He was the Bulldog head coach from 1895 to 1899.
