Final Stats

ATHENS-----The fourth-ranked Georgia men's tennis team beat TCU 7-0 in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility Sunday.

The Bulldogs (2-0) will face No. 34 Virginia Tech Monday at 2 p.m., with the winner advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 17-20 in Charlottesville, Va.

"The guys did extremely well and earned a good victory," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "We have a long season ahead of us, and we are trying to get better each day. As long as we are playing hard, I think we have a great chance of continuing our success. We'll see what happens. Virginia Tech will be a good challenge. They'll be ready for us and we need to ready for them."

To start the day in doubles, the No. 8 team of Garrett Brasseaux and Wil Spencer won the first completed match, 8-6 over Nick Chappell and JT Sundling at No. 1, then ninth-ranked Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada downed Paul Chappell and Will Stein, 8-4, at No. 2 to give Georgia a 1-0 lead.

The match at No. 3 between Hernus Pieters and KU Singh and Daniel Sanchez and Blake Wiggins was tied at 7-7 when play was suspended.

Georgia won the first set on all four matches to start singles, including a 6-2, 6-3 win by Singh over Sanchez at No. 3. No. 26 Taboada increased the lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Max Stevens at No. 4, then tenth-ranked Doumbia provided the clincher at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sundling.

At No. 1, third-ranked Spencer outlasted Nick Chappell in a super tiebreaker, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0(8). Nathan Pasha gave the Bulldogs their sixth point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Facundo Lugones, then No. 64 Pieters closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Paul Chappell at No. 5.

"We played well today," Pieters said. "They are not a bad team. Ignacio and Sadio got us off to a good start in doubles, then Wil and Garrett clinched it. That set the tone for singles, and it's always nice to get three points in straight sets. All-in-all it was a good performance."

The ITA Kickoff concludes Monday at 9 a.m., when TCU (1-1) faces Nebraska, and the Georgia-Virginia Tech match will follow.
