Georgia Student-Athletes Excel in Classroom

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia gymnastics team earned the highest grade point average among all sports for the fall semester of 2011. The gymnastics squad, consisting of 15 student-athletes, recorded a combined GPA of 3.38.
The women’s and men’s cross country teams earned the second and third highest GPA for the semester, recording GPAs of 3.30 and 3.23, respectively.
The 66 students who make up the equestrian team compiled a GPA of 3.22, followed by the women’s track and field team with a GPA of 3.16 ad 53 student-athletes.
The women’s swimming and diving team, which consists of 28 students, earned a cumulative GPA of 3.14, while the 27 students that make up the soccer team compiled a GPA of 3.07. The volleyball team, with 16 students, finished the fall semester with a GPA of 3.04.
The women’s tennis team earned a grade point average of 2.95, followed by the baseball team with a GPA of 2.93. The baseball team earned the second highest GPA for a men’s sport and consists of 43 students.
The women’s and men’s golf teams, each made up of nine student-athletes, finished with GPAs of 2.90 and 2.89, respectively.
With a GPA of 2.878, the men’s swimming and diving team, with 25 members, ranked as the third highest GPA for a men’s team. The 10 students-athletes that make up the men’s tennis team earned a GPA of 2.875, while the men’s track and field team, made up of 53 students, tallied a GPA of 2.86.
The softball team, made up of 20 student-athletes, earned a fall GPA of 2.85, followed by the football team with a GPA of 2.67 and 123 student-athletes. The men’s and women’s basketball teams rounded out the teams, finishing with a 2.64 and 2.57 GPA, respectively.
The combined GPA for all student-athletes was a 2.95, with the women’s sports earning a 3.10 and the men’s program finishing with a 2.78. Georgia had 12 student-athletes who finished the fall semester with a GPA of 4.0, while 121 earned between a 3.50 and 3.99 GPA. The total number of student-athletes with a 3.0 or better was 273, which made up 49.8 percent of student-athletes, and included 183 scholarship players and 90 non-scholarship student-athletes.
