ATHENS, Ga. --- The University of Georgia cheerleading squad finished third at the 2011 NCA Collegiate National Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Twenty-five girls made the trip to this year's national competition along with the Spirit Coordinator, Ben O'Brien.

"I'm beyond proud of these girls," said O'Brien. "Even though it didn't quite end the way we wanted it to, they went out there and represented the University of Georgia with class and athleticism."

The competition consisted of a 45 second cheer and a two minute and 15 second routine combining stunts, tumbling, jumps, motions, basket tosses and dance. The three senior captains on this year's squad--Ashley Hines, Erica Smith and Rene Whatley--helped propel Georgia to second (only .008 behind first-place Louisville) after the semi-final round of competition on Thursday, April 7.

Finals took place on Friday, April 8, at the Band Shell--an outside venue overlooking the beach. Georgia improved their placement this year after finishing fifth in last year's national competition.

2011 Final Results:

1) Louisville

2) NC State

3) Georgia

4) South Carolina

5) Illinois
