Georgia Still Sixth At SEC Women's Golf

AUBURN, Ala. --- The No. 11-ranked Georgia women's golf team remained sixth on the team leaderboard at the SEC Championships on Saturday, but went from nine to 28 strokes off the lead after carding a 309 at the Auburn University Club.

"Our position in the field didn't change, but our relation to the leaders is very different," head coach Kelley Hester said. "I think all the scores were higher today, but some teams still got it done. Those are the teams that will be competing for a championship on Sunday. This is the kind of day you hope to learn from."

A day after the Bulldogs posted three par-or-better individual tallies, Marta Silva Zamora's 2-over 74 was Georgia's low round. The Bulldogs also counted Emilie Burger's 77, Kiara Hayashida's 78 and an 80, the score recorded by both Milena Savich and Amelia Hill.

The Bulldogs started slow, playing the first two holes at 4-over, and never recovered.

"It was definitely a different golf course today," Hester said. "The conditions were tough. After the storm went through last night, it was really windy, maybe 15-25 miles per hour. When you know it's going to be difficult, you have to go out there and be tough. We did play the back side better, which is encouraging. We stopped the bleeding somewhat."

No. 17 Auburn shot 290 and remained atop team standings at 573. The homestanding Tigers own a nine-shot lead over No. 3 Alabama at 582. Rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 8 LSU at 587, No. 14 Tennessee at 593, No. 12 Arkansas at 594, the Bulldogs at 601, No. 21 Vanderbilt at 603, South Carolina at 606, Florida at 611 and Kentucky at 620.

Tennessee's Emily Popson is the individual leader at 4-under 140. She owns a one-shot lead over Cydney Clanton of Auburn and Emily Tubert of Arkansas. Silva Zamora is tied for fifth, four shots back. In addition, Burger and Hayashida are tied for 17th at 149, Savich is tied for 46th at 159 and Hill is tied for 49th at 160.
