AUBURN, Ala. --- Despite a valiant effort, Marta Silva Zamora's run at the SEC women's golf individual title came up one stroke shy at the Auburn University Club on Sunday. Silva Zamora fired a 5-under 67 in the final round to finish at 5-under 211 but was still a shot off the pace of Tennessee's Erica Popson.
Silza Zamora, who was paired with Popson on Sunday, began the final round four shots back and tied for fifth.
That margin was quickly cut in half after Silva Zamora birdied No. 1 and Popson bogeyed No. 3. Both birdied No. 4 before Silva Zamora trimmed another shot off the lead with a birdie at No. 6. Popson regained some breathing room with a birdie at No. 8. Both goflers birdied No. 12 and the margin remained at two until Silva Zamora birdied No. 17 to again close the gap to a single stroke.
Silva Zamora and Popson parred No. 18.
"Marta was so impressive," head coach Kelley Hester said. "To shoot 5-under side-by-side with the leader was very impressive. I have to give it to Erica Popson, though. She had ice water in her veins. Marta really came out of the gates at her, but she was steady. It was fun to watch and definitely the highlight of the weekend."
The 11th-ranked Bulldogs recorded a 10-over 298 and finished eighth overall at 899. Other than Silva Zamora's 67, Georgia also counted a 76 from Emilie Burger, a 77 from Amelia Hill and a 78 from Milena Savich. Kiara Hayashida shot 79.
"I'm obviously very disappointed with an eight-place finish," Hester said. "I told the girls afterward that we need to see where we are, regroup and find out where we need to go as a team to get ready for Regionals."
Overall, Burger tied for 19th at 225, Hayashida tied for 29th at 228, and Savich and Hill both tied for 49th at 237.
Homestanding Auburn completed its wire-to-wire lead over the team field. The Tigers finished at 864, 11 shots better than No. 3 Alabama. Rounding out the top-10 teams were No. 8 LSU at 887, No. 12 Arkansas at 893, South Carolina at 893, No. 14 Tennessee at 895, No. 21 Vanderbilt at 897, the Bulldogs at 899, Florida at 907 and Kentucky at 927.
Silva Zamora notched her seventh top-10 finish in eight tournaments finished this season. Over the weekend, she recorded her 17th and 18th par-or-better rounds in 26 loops played during the 2010-11 campaign. Silva Zamora is now a combined 17-under this season.
Georgia will now await its Regional assignment for the NCAA Championships. Twenty-four teams will compete in the East, Central and West Regionals on May 5-7, with the top-eight teams from each advancing to the NCAA Championships on May 18-21 at the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. The East Regional will be in Daytona, Fla., the Central Regional will be in South Bend, Ind., and the West Regional will be in Seattle, Wash.
