ATHENS--- Student-athletes from cross country, equestrian, football, softball, tennis and track and field welcomed Barrow elementary students and parents to school at the "Walk with the Dogs to School" event on Nov. 4.

Barrow students and parents formed walking school buses with Georgia student athletes to provide a safe and healthy means of getting to school.

"It was a really cool just to help out all the kids walking across the street and making sure they get to school safely," said Julia Hemingway, a sophomore equestrian rider from Alpharetta, Ga.

Children who rode regular school buses were also greeted by student-athletes.

"I try not to take it for granted. It's fun to come out and meet new people and help them start out having a good day," said Nathan Theus, freshman offensive lineman from Jacksonville, Fla. "You sometimes don't know what people's lives are like, so you just want to put a smile on their face and hope they have a good day."

In addition to pumpkin bread and coffee donated by Jittery Joe's, students were given wristbands inscribed with "Safe Routes to School" and flashing clip-on lights.

The event was in support of Safe Routes to School encouraging children to make it to school either by walking, biking or any means other than a vehicle.
