March 09, 2010 | Men's Basketball

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Tom Brennan, a Georgia Bulldog in the late 1960s who later achieved notoriety as a coach and broadcaster, will represent Georgia as part of the 2010 class of the Chick-fil-A SEC Basketball Legends. This group, which includes one ex-player or coach from each of the 12 member institutions, will be honored at the SEC Tournament March 11-14 in Nashville, Tenn.

Each Chick-fil-A SEC Basketball legend will be recognized at halftime of his institution’s first tournament game. He will also make appearances at the Dr. Pepper SEC FanFare exhibition.

Brennan played his college basketball at Georgia from 1969-71 before achieving distinction first in the coaching profession and later as a popular broadcaster.

Brennan, a native of Phillipsburg, N.J., lettered from 1969 until 1971 as a Bulldog under coach Ken Rosemond. He was named recipient of the team’s Leadership Trophy as a senior. He served an assistant basketball coach at Villanova under Rollie Massimino, Seton Hall under Bill Raftery, and William & Mary under Bruce Parkhill before going to Yale as head coach for four seasons from 1982 until 1986.

Brennan became head coach at the University of Vermont in 1986 where he remained until his retirement in 2005. His last four Catamount teams won the America East Conference championship and he was named conference coach of the year three times. Brennan’s last two teams played in the NCAA Tournament and his 2005 NCAA Tournament team upset Big East Champion Syracuse in the first round.

While coaching at Vermont, he also co-hosted the state’s most popular talk radio show, and just after his retirement, he began a four-year stint as a studio host for college basketball on ESPN.

This marks the 12th year of the SEC Basketball Legends program. Previous representatives from Georgia include: 1999 – Vern Fleming; 2000 – Alec Kessler; 2001 – Zippy Morocco; 2002 – Dominique Wilkins; 2003 – James Banks; 2004 – Lavon Mercer; 2005 – Ronnie Hogue; 2006 – Joe Ward; 2007 – Litterial Green; 2008 – Hugh Durham; 2009 – Shandon Anderson.
