Lady Bulldogs Advance In NCAA Tournament By Beating Tulane

March 21, 2010 | Women's Basketball

TEMPE, Ariz. --- Seniors Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson combined for 40 points, 20 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and three steals to lead the Georgia Lady Bulldogs to a 64-59 win over Tulane in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament here on Saturday night.

Georgia improved to 24-8 on the year, while Tulane ended its campaign with a 26-7 mark. The Lady Bulldogs, who are the No. 5 seed in the Sacramento Regional, will now face fourth-seeded Oklahoma State on Monday for a bid to the "Sweet 16."

Houts finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals, while Robinson posted a season-high 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

"Personally, I’m just thankful and appreciative that I have these two sitting here beside me," Andy Landers said with his seniors at his side in the post-game press conference. "Our entire team played well. I felt all year long with as many young kids as we have has got to be led and carried and led to some extent by our veteran players and they did that today.”

The Lady Bulldogs started quick and raced to a 10-0 lead less than four minutes in. Tulane responded by turning steals in the quick points and eventually grabbed a 23-22 led. Robinson and Houts scored all the points in a 6-1 run that put Georgia up 27-24 at the break.

The early portion of the second stanza featured another series of runs, with Georgia building a 34-27 edge before a 10-0 surge gave the Green Wave its largest lead at 37-34. A three-point play by Robinson tied the score again.

An 18-2 Lady Bulldog run served as the decisive blow. Georgia finished that span with a 62-48 lead with 1:46 left. Tulane did score 11 of the game's final 13 points and pulled within five points with 38 seconds left.

“The game was for the most part as we expected that it would be. Tulane has excellent athleticism," Landers said. "I think the thing that impressed us the most was not only do they have great quickness and athleticism but they use it and they come at you. They come at you on defense and on offense and they never stop. They are very well coached and they take a lot of pride in the way they play and they’re hard. We felt like going in that they were a real challenge and it was."
