September 21, 2009 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. --- Rain continued to wreak havoc on day three of the 42nd annual Southern Intercollegiates Sunday, but four Georgia players won singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Matches were again forced inside for the third straight day due to the wet conditions.

No. 2 seed Nate Schnugg beat Michael Pereira of UNC-Wilmington, 6-1, 1-6, 1-0(8), in the round of 32, then downed Vanderbilt's Adam Baker in the round of 16, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(8). He will face teammate Christian Vitulli in the quarterfinals Monday at 9:00 a.m. Vitulli beat South Florida's Jamal Adderley, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The winner of Schnugg and Vitulli will play Georgia's No. 7 seed Javier Garrapiz in the semifinals. Garrapiz beat Vanderbilt's Alex DiValerio, 7-6(3), 6-3, and downed Davey Sandgren of Tennessee, 6-3, 6-4.

In Division II, Borja Malo topped Tennessee's Edward Jones, 6-4, 6-2, to move to the quarterfinals. He will face either Charlie Jones of Vanderbilt or Georgia Tech's Miguel Muguruza in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Drake Bernstein downed Georgia Tech's Dean O'Brien, 6-4, 6-3, in the Division I round of 32, but was eliminated by Vanderbilt's Ryan Lipman, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 16.

"It was a long day, but overall it was productive," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "Our guys battled hard and I'm happy for Nate, Javy and Christian. We were hoping they didn't have to play each other, but we have no control over the draw, and they will benefit from it. Jamie (Hunt) came out strong and lost a close one. Overall I am very happy with our effort and progress."

Both the Division I and II doubles flights were canceled along with Division III singles.

The tournament's No. 1 seed John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee was eliminated by Duke's Henrique Cunha, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(8), in the round of 32.

In other action, Hunt dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Vanderbilt's Vijay Paul in Division I, Will Oliver fell to Georgia Tech's Austin Roebuck, 6-4, 6-2, in the Division II round of 64, and Alex Hill fell in the Division II round of 32 to the Yellow Jackets' Dusan Miljevic, 6-4, 6-1.

Georgia players have won 15 singles crowns in the Southern Intercollegiates including three of the last four.
