SEC's ?Together We Can? Food Drive Kicks Off Saturday
September 18, 2009 | General
ATHENS, Ga. --- The Southeastern Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee – which includes Georgia track and field athletes Taylor Adams and Jamaal Parker – will have its third annual league-wide canned food drive Sept. 18-27.
All 12 SEC institutions are participating in the Together We Can project by collecting food and financial donations at various sporting events, community locations and on campuses. During last year’s food drive, the SEC SAAC raised more than 150,000 pounds of food and donations that benefited local food banks and shelters.
Georgia fans may donate at the following events: the cross country and equestrian meets on Sept. 19 and the volleyball match on Sept. 27. There will be clearly marked designated areas where the items can be left. Cans will also be collected during the football game on Sept. 26 at the bus stop between East Campus Village and the Ramsey Center Parking Deck and the sidewalk on the Carlton Street side of the Coliseum Training Facility.
Georgia student-athletes also will be accepting canned goods at the Kroger on College Station Road from 5-8 p.m. on Sept. 23 and Sept. 24.
“I think the food drive is awesome because it not only shows each school’s commitment to the ones in need, but also shows the communities’ support to help out fellow people in need,” Adams said. “The more we can donate, the more lives we can help impact. Even though we have busy schedules as student-athletes, we still care about our community and want to help anyway we can. I love that it is an SEC-wide drive because it has the potential to create more supporters from all over the Southeast. It is a great cause, and I hope that we are able to improve the amount of donations since last year.”
Georgia’s efforts will benefit the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia.
