Golf Teams Sweep Faculty Athletics Rep Awards

August 27, 2009 | General

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men's and women's golf teams swept the Faculty Athletics Representatives Award for the 2008-09 school year. The award is given annually to UGA's men's and women's programs with the highest team grade point average for the year.

The men's golf team captured the award for the ninth time overall and extended its streak of eight consecutive honors dating back to 2001-02. The squad completed the year with a 3.17 GPA, with the swimming and diving team (3.11) finishing second.

"It is stressed to our guys from the start that one of the main reasons they are here is for academics," head coach Chris Haack said. "They understand that what they want to accomplish from a golf standpoint can't be done unless their academics are in order. We've been fortunate in that our guys have been disciplined and have kept up with their academic responsibilities. I also give a lot of credit to Rhonda (Kilpatrick), Glada (Horvat) and the rest of the academic staff for keeping our guys focused and on track academically."

The women's golf team secured the honor for the seventh time, the most of any UGA women's team since the award's inception in 1992-93. The golfers posted a 3.34 GPA, edging out both the swimming and diving (3.32) and soccer (3.30) squads.

"Strong academic performance has been a longstanding tradition with the women's golf team here at Georgia," head coach Kelley Hester said. "It's great to see our program back in that form. Our golfers know they're here to get a degree first, and it looks like they all are doing a great job in doing that. This is a huge tribute to our academic staff, in particular Claire Foggin and Glada, for the wonderful job that they all do and their efforts as well."

This year represents just the fourth time teams from the same sport have swept the award. The golf programs also did so in 1994-95 and 2004-05, while both tennis teams secured the honor in 1999-2000.

The award capped a strong academic year for the UGA Athletic Association.

During the fall semester, Georgia's 500 student-athletes produced 12 perfect 4.0s and 95 GPAs ranging from 3.50-3.99. All told, 274 of those student-athletes recorded GPAs of 3.0 or above.

Of UGA's 508 student-athletes for the spring semester, 25 secured 4.0s and another 104 compiled GPAs between 3.50-3.99. Those student-athletes were among 263 who earned a 3.0 or better.
