Final Scrimmage Preparations Before Season Opener

August 25, 2009 | Football

ATHENS, Ga. --- The 13th-ranked Bulldogs practiced for an hour and 20 minutes under sunny skies at the Woodruff practice fields on Tuesday afternoon.

Georgia’s practice focused mainly on scout team play on Tuesday as the Bulldogs readied for their scrimmage at Sanford Stadium scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

“We’re getting closer to that first game with about 10 days and seven practices to go,” said head coach Mark Richt.  “We had a good day today and we will play a half of football tomorrow.  I hope everyone will be excited and that the scouts will play their tails off in the scrimmage.”

With the team’s opener versus Oklahoma State arriving on Sept. 5, Richt said that he thought sophomore center Ben Jones would be ready to return after he suffered an ankle injury last Wednesday.  Richt added that he thought safety Quintin Banks would not be playing in Georgia’s first game after reinjuring his knee.

It was also announced on Tuesday that redshirt freshman tight end Bryce Ros has been forced to end his career with the Bulldogs because of a chronic foot condition.  Ros’ father Frank Ros was a former Georgia linebacker who was captain on the Bulldogs’ 1980 national championship team.

“Going through what he is going through is never fun and we don’t look forward to having to deal with issues like his,” Richt said.  “But it’s a situation where he just couldn’t go and it has bothered him since high school.”

This will be Georgia’s first opener played away from Sanford Stadium since the Bulldogs shut out Clemson 30-0 to start the 2003 season.  Georgia welcomed Oklahoma State as its opening opponent in Athens in 2007 and topped the Cowboys 35-14.

Kickoff for the UGA-OSU game is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET and ABC will televise the game.
